Iron Hill Project Thread

Okay, guys, here's what we're going to do:
We need to do one more space walk, to check the landing legs. This will be Saturday night, and I'd like either RickD or Lydia to take it. The chat meeting for this will be Saturday at 23:00 UTC.

The orbital insertion is predicted for 01:20 UTC Monday/21:20 EDT Sunday night. The chat meeting will start one hour before that.

This is it, gentlemen!:) It's been a long trip. Good luck to everybody:thumbup:

I am unavailable on Saturday night until at least midnight EDT, so I encourage Lydia to do the walk. I'm expecting to be available on Sunday for the orbital insertion chat.

Best to everyone.

Rick

Got up at 4:44 am today & watched the sky, but I wasnt able to get a view of mercury due to a stupid streetlight. If youre really patient you still may be able to see aour mission target in the eastern sky just before dawn>

Weekly update. As of 01:15 UTC tonight, we will have 48 hours until arrival.

After we brake into orbit, do you guys want to do the landing right away (it could take a couple hours) or wait until the next morning?

Next spacewalk will be Saturday at midnight EDT/Sunday 0400 UTC.
RickD, this one will be yours. I will lower the landing legs, and your job will be to inspect them and ensure they have deployed properly.
State will be posted half an hour before the scheduled time.

Let's wait to the morning, so we will be ready to deploy the base as fast as possible...

Okay, we have one vote for waiting. We need two more...

Will be as prompt as possible on Saturday night for the space walk. I'm looking forward to stretching my legs a bit. As for when to land, I'm constrained by the workweek, so I won't be online on any weekday morning. Feel free, however, to do this anytime that is convenient for you guys.

Rick

I'll treat that as a "nay" vote. That leaves Lydia and Mojoey. What do you guys think?

Rick, I won't be there for the chat meeting tonight, so I'll just give a couple of important safety regs before you set out:
1) Stop the gravity wheel before you leave the airlock.

2) Take my UMMU with you as well. Safety dictates that we never perform an EVA without backup:shifty:

Calling all developers! BruceJohnJennerLawson of the B-Crew has the following request:
the next 2 weeks are major development crunch time for me in releasing the ShuttleD. Can you put out a request for me among the IHP members, for someone with any modelling experience to do 2 small modelling projects for me? I need A-anyone who knows a little bit about launch vehicle technology to create a fairing for my ship (will send anim8or, 3ds sources of course). And B-the fun part; I need someone to wreck the models of my ship so I can have pieces of charred debris around if the ship is crashed into the moon or something else. The help requests arent demands, but it will be a little hard to balance everything without at least a little help.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Spacewalk completed. Landing gear appears functional and fully extended. Per your instructions, I stopped the wheel and you accompanied me. Upon return to the ship, I restarted the wheel but left the gear down. No problems with the hull were observed.

Thanks for the opportunity! Scenario attached.

Well done!
Tomorrow at 21:14 EDT/01:14 UTC: Hermian orbital insertion. Finally!:woohoo:

EDIT: That was my second space walk. There are few things more unsettling than looking down and seeing stars under your feet:shifty:

Chat meeting opens tomorrow night at midnight UTC/20:00 EDT. When we land:
1) I will deploy the crew lift and rover lift, release the cargo, then step on to the surface and say something cool and historic:)

2) The scenario will be passed to Felipi, who will take RickD and myself out to start building the habitat section. NOTE: On the first day we will build the habitat section ONLY. The rest will not be added until the second day.

3) Felipi, as soon as the habitat section is built, get the entire team inside quickly. There's no real danger, but I just don't want to waste any time (or air:shifty:)

Three months ago, I had a crazy idea. It was just something I wanted to do for myself. But it unexpectedly caught on. People started following it, and four other great Orbinauts decided to join me. Today, me and those four awesome people are orbiting the closest planet to the Sun.

While we're not out of the woods yet, I am amazed at what a great job Lydia, RickD, Felipi1205, and Mojoey have done. I am also very grateful for the help of Pipcard and Chrothor, and the senior Orbinauts who dispensed advice to us.

Tomorrow, after fourteen long weeks, we will set down on the Iron Planet. This is a huge occasion. An enormous amount of commitment and effort has gone into making the Iron Hill Project the smashing success it has become. Thanks so much to everyone, and keep up the good work:thumbup:

Many thanks to TMac and the rest of the gang for getting us this far. If your monitor can survive the experience, I have attached my pic.
