How will we look at this in ten months, in two years ?

I doubt we will even remember it well. Who still knows what happened in April 2019? Or April 2018?

I hope, the right people will learn from the pandemic and when ever somebody questions the bigger reserves and new playbooks for a once in a lifetime event, all that will be needed will be "Because we want no second COVID-2019"

Also I hope more people will now realize, that the internet is not for spreading hatred and kitten movies, but actually is a critical infrastructure, since the internet solved many problems that would have been a big mess in the time before it. Maybe teaching children online will become a new channel, that supplements the classic classroom and can mostly compensate it, when similar problems happen again.

The blunt capitalism failed again. There are things, that are no market. Not traded on a big bazar. We should keep that in mind. Capitalism is maybe the best theory of economics we have right now, but its shortcomings are getting visible again. We need a new evolution there.

This one was much worse than SARS. And still, there are some things around that make me optimistic for the future. The citizens can do astounding things, if you tell them in calm, simple words what the problem is. Much better and faster, than if you would have needed to force them to a behavior by police and miliary. We should keep this spirit alive in good times. Having smart empathic citizens is a great asset. If you have enough of them, even the usual mass of huge idiots is not harmful.

And we need bigger boots for kicking the lies. When Hungary gets a huge aid package from the EU, they should fear the consequences of cheating it (again), lying to their own population that the EU did not help, only the tyrants of Russia, China and Turkey. The EU did 200 times more then those did. Much faster than they did, silently and professionally.

The tyrants need willing liars to celebrate them. The democrats are expected to only get satisfaction in doing their best duty. That must change. We must celebrate the good guys again. Especially we need to pay proper wages to health care workers, because we expect a lot from them in good times and we expected at least heroic performances in the past months.

The US has seen three days straight of the number of new cases declining.
I wonder if it really does, or if the testing just does not scale fast enough to catch up with the virus.

Right, but remember that the number of deaths and the number of people in intensive care both lag behind the higher infection rate, because typically it takes over a week from infection to hospitalization (i.e., deaths and hospitalization rates reflect a portion of infection rates from 1-2 weeks earlier). So without enough testing kits available, we will continue to be somewhat in the dark for the actual infection numbers.

Holy sh**, that's something that I hadn't even realized: if this had happened ~20 years ago, or even only 10, before relatively widespread broadband access everywhere (despite the shortcomings in connection speed in many places, including where I live, it's still "mostly functional"), schooling would have been completely impossible just like many jobs (including mine, which I can approx. 70% do from home).

I'm teaching three engineering lectures every day from my living room. Surprisingly it's not the train wreck I was anticipating. It's still very possible to engage with my students effectively.

The hands-on lab courses are an entirely different story, but certain aspects of them can be virtualized. Unfortunately our school is a maritime institution with a strong tradition of hands-on lab courses, and the Coast Guard requires physical demonstration of certain elements. They are telling us to "be pragmatic" about those requirements without defining what they mean by "pragmatic".

For anybody who knows of the former representative from Texas, Ron Paul, he believed the reaction was wrong for states in America to close up shop. It was just a over reaching of power, which could lead to abuse. And was comparing, vehicle accidents, and influenza statistics with this covid crap.

Now he may have a point, but he doesn't mention, the fact that the health services are overwhelmed, and the danger it poses to everybody.

His son a representative from Kentucky, got the virus and has recovered, but he was sort of relaxed about it weeks before he went into isolation.

Dr Fauci is some sort of dictator or dominating figure who may be up to no good.

Except that he does not rule. Seriously, he is simple one of the most experienced researchers for exactly the kind of virus observed in the USA, what do you expect? Ignore him and listening to Trump alone, who is already getting celebrated for declaring war against all news agencies not worshipping him as a "stable genius"?

We have 8 important things right now, that did not happen in the past 40 years:

  1. Hospitals are filled with people who all have the same diagnosis.
  2. ICUs are filled with people who all have the same diagnosis.
  3. 25%-35% of the medical personal is contracting the illness from their patients.
  4. Too few ventilation units available.
  5. A triage is necessary because of lack of medical supplies.
  6. All severe cases in hospital show the same uniform symptoms.
  7. The cause of death of all patients in a ICU is the same.
  8. Medical supplies and medications are running out.
Yes, we did not see that in the western world in the past 40 years. It is THAT kind of special. Something some of us might experience only once in a lifetime. For others it might be the last experience in life.

I'm not a Libertarian, but I have checked to see what Mr Paul says. He seems to see the society one sided, Mr McAdams isn't correct when he says there haven't been young people who have been killed because of this.

In this clip, the latest.

We had people in my rather young age (around 40), who died without any previous illness. Simply because of a combination of damaging symptoms all caused by the same virus.

We had young children dying contrary to the belief, that COVID-19 does not harm them. Most of them had previous illnesses that contributed there, but those are not exotic or even rare illnesses. One third of the population has some grade of COPD in some places, smoking or living in a household with smokers can already kill people, including children.

I know a young teenager, who has multiple "preconditions" that can all kill her alone with COVID-19. And we sure don't want to play with her life.

I would sure as hell rather trust somebody with a CV like Fauci in such a situation. And not somebody whose prime qualification is a youtube account.

And reading the comments below the Youtube video only makes me hope one thing: Please let these all be just terribly buggy computer programs.

I know that humans can be THAT kind of evil and braindead at the same time, as German history taught the world. But please, not again. Not so many. Let those be just a few criminal scums, using multiple accounts and software by smarter criminal guys to abuse the first law of the Internet: In the internet, nobody knows you are a dog.

(And no, antibiotics will sure not help you against COVID-19. They can only protect you from getting some additional visitors from the microscopic world)

US conservative voters tend to be suspicious of the Federal bureaucracy, because the executive branch is seen as having gained too much size and power, and the head bureaucrats are all appointed, not elected, and thus seen as unaccountable. There is a perception that such bureaucrats tend to deflect questions about the constitutionality of their actions with appeals to their expertise in the field that their department is responsible for, and that they often have a political agenda on the side and/or try to enact policies that make their department seem more relevant than it actually is in order to make sure that their jobs continue to exist or to expand their bailiwick. The question is not what powers they have, but what powers they are trying to accrue. With respect to law enforcement and intelligence agencies, I think this is definitely true, though I don't think there's quite as much coordination between them as many conservatives seem to think.

With respect to COVID and quarantines, the CDC has been recommending policies for state and local governments to implement, and those governments have been implementing such policies as they see fit, so I really don't see any federal overreach there, and state and local governments have always had quarantine powers (they've just not been used in a while, what with deadly epidemics being rarer than in the past).

As for Trump, he's being praised for declaring war on news agencies that don't flatter him because dishonesty and overt bias in the press have been seen as problems by the conservative electorate for decades, and he's seen as the first successful Republican politician to speak out against that. That he's on a power trip himself, and that "the enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy, no more, no less", seems to be lost on conservative voters.

I was a poster on the ronpaulforums for many years, almost ten. And a lot of libertarians, don't think America needs an over reaching government or foreign policy.

They advocated, fund raising for healthcare, people could chip in, and help build the roads, now a few posters suggested this, instead of who ever contracted by a state or county authority to do so.

I have even sent a message to the ron paul institute last year, on how would the sea lanes be kept open if America didn't do this, no response, perhaps every nation could be take a turn in policing the world, if they don't believe in a UN, which the Irish have contributed, at the same time, war is a racket, but it also denies that there aren't fools in the world, or ambitions by others, somebody like Mr Paul wouldn't of gone to Vietnam, if he'd been leader instead of Lyndon Johnson.

The heart of the Ron Paul communities, is family, welfare loafing, they don't believe in welfare for lazy ***** in society, but popping kids if somebody can afford them, it is all selfish, narcissism, and conservative, religious orientated outlooks, home schooling, I wonder why that is, perhaps religious sensitives, too much trash taught in schools.

Some even dabble in exclusive white only sympathy, like in South Africa. Almost a sense of Yee ha, cow boy entitlement, pretending to be sitting bull, the sheer arrogance of some, like they are natives themselves being taken over, by other cultures and some faith. I got pissed with one guy, I referred to him as a religious plant, and fascist, all while I was seen as the NASA socialist, lazy bum.

How ever some did support NASA, as a tax payer funded program. But they believed in private enterprise for the Moon or Mars, or hell exploit the planets, while no thought as to the reality of destroying them.

At heart of libertarians message is a balanced budget, with a weak federal government is the real reality, religion or not, Ron Paul or not.

Coronavirus: 20 suspected phone mast attacks over Easter

Not our finest hour.
Not helped by a numskull breakfast tv presenter here giving it more publicity than it deserves with some bizarre comments.
Been referred to the government watchdog after some 400+complaints.

The scary thing is how contagious and pervasive it is. Dogs, cats and apes can at least be carriers. It can aerosolize depending on atmospheric conditions. Humans are contagious for up to 20 days. Traces of it can be found even in sewage. Who knows , maybe even birds can have it.
There are several uncomfortable ifs as well. Side effects like infertility or deadly vulnerability to other coronaviruses, and immunity that is not long-lasting. Any of these, and it could be the mad max scenario come summer.

Well, its not getting any better...

More than one in five deaths in England and Wales is linked to coronavirus, figures show.
The Office for National Statistics said in the week ending 3 April the virus was cited on 3,475 death certificates.
It pushed the total number of deaths in that week to over 16,000 - a record high and 6,000 more than normal at this time of year when deaths tend to fall.

Depending where and when?

My parents in the UK born in the 1920's went through "Fever Hospitals". Sent away to survive the childhood illnesses of the time.
Whooping Cough.
Diphtheria.
Scarlet Fever.
Measles.

Did other countries do similar?
