Launch News Orion EFT-1 Update thread

Think he'll want to stay around for another 10 years for that opportunity?

Maybe. More likely for an earlier flight like EM-2.

Final apoapsis is over 3100 nautical miles.

Final apoapsis is over 3100 nautical miles.
Initially, after SECO-2:
  • ApA: 5809.7 km
  • PeA: -37 km

A few moments (~5-10 minutes) before reaching apoapsis:
  • ApA: 5789.1 km
  • PeA: -34.5 km

Interesting concept photo of Orion/unknown ship combo in Jovian orbit.

Almost at apoapsis. Awesome views of the Earth. Everything is working as expected.

Some perspective.

Guidance has calculated that G-forces will peak at 8.2G during reentry.

I think it's much steeper? The periapsis was somewhere below the ground while I remember AMSO will kill you if you do that.

Orion is past apoapsis. Peak was 3132 nautical miles.

Yes, but why did they choose such a reentry? is that for testing purposes?

Very likely. Given the budget constraints nowadays, you want to get everything you can from a test flight using a Delta 4H.

They always talked about simulating a reentry from the Moon. And since they didn't go all the way to the Moon I guess they have to go steeper to approximate it. And then they probably add a bit more.

Orion has separated from the service module/second stage.

SM (Stage 2) separation confirmed.

Orientation manoeuvers of the CM are nominal.

being human rated, perhaps the capsule is designed for a much more furious reentry than a typical mission profile will require, in such a way that that during a normal mission, it will not be pushing any performance envelopes
