Not too much time for DCS lately, which leads to many "what the hell was that keybind for xxx again?" moments but still lurking and watching any updates, announcements and the ever approaching EDGE / DCS 2.

This thread is my primary news source

Same situation here. Someday I'll get back into the fray...

The good news are, you will read the words "Self-adjusting" very often in the manual.

The bad news - thats a cockpit layout, that requires you to think in Russian.

This should be a nice overview for anyone who's interested:

The Mi-8 is also like that: at first it looks like someone threw a bucket of switches in the cockpit hoping for the best.

I considered that one-oh-nine K from this sale, but there is still an A-10C and a KA-50 that I have not touched yet from the last sale. Also, I had my fill of WWII with Jane's excellent for its time WWII Fighters. What was needed was a good jet combat aircraft simulator that is a bit more immersive than a "frontage" driving a 3D engine, which is what DCS is for me. I'll continue waiting for and looking forward to the Mig 15, this time.

Have fun with the Mig-21! It is not so bad. Went through a couple of dodgy spells, with poor fps in MP, and then a patch that weakened the landing gear a bit too much, but it is great now. Whoever thought of hanging bombs and other AG weapons on an interceptor should be certified insane, but surprisingly it works very well. The Grom AGM's and the Sapphire radar are particularly entertaining. :)

So, yeah...

After some of the training flights:
  • It's properly fun
  • Cockpit still looks like someone threw a bucket of buttons...
  • ...however, the navigation system is surprisingly easy to use and "logic"
  • Landing is hard: more or less requires a shuttle-esque flare

Overall, the first impression is very positive, even though it will probably get slaughtered by Eagles in air to air. Haven't tried weapons employment yet.

:) Check! Lots more fun to be had going through the emergency procedures, too.

Yes, but don't be fooled by the auto-land. It is just a bobby basic approach coupler - no auto landing in it. Disconnect by "minimums" and hand fly or suffer the consequences of a violent porpoise
[*] and slam onto the runway.

  • Landing is hard: more or less requires a shuttle-esque flare
Not that hard, really, if you religiously respect landing weight and approach speeds, going by the speeds in the real world manual, not the one that comes with the add-on manual (there's an error there, I think, unless it has been corrected since the last time I looked). 270-280 kmh IAS at touch-down is about right, with SPS (BLC) active. Add 20-25 if you switch it off.

You could get the real world manual at the Leatherneck site, however it seems not anymore since the release.

Overall, the first impression is very positive, even though it will probably get slaughtered by Eagles in air to air. Haven't tried weapons employment yet.
It does get slaughtered. AWACS/EWR/GCI is an absolute must if you want a fighting chance taking it into combat with modern enemy fighters around. The good thing is that it can still run away from them very effectively (I find!).

[*]Thinking about that comment, I thought porpoises were supposed to be pretty friendly...

True, what I meant was that it is significantly harder to land than the A-10, which behaves like a Cessna 172's big jet engined brother. :) (Plus I didn't even know there was an approach coupler available :shifty: I haven't yet reached that point in the training flights and manual yet)

The cockpit has to be one of the finest released to date for DCS.
(DCS's screenshot compression doesn't really give it justice)

Especially the fact that the cockpit gets extended if you use special payloads.

Yeah, they do seem to have taken down the real world flight manual from the Leatherneck site. But in case anyone is interested, the same one that they had for download there is here. Apart from a couple of sim related things, I generally found it more useful and interesting than the "shipped with item" manual. I think that shows how well the model was done in DCS, really.

Hey I just noticed that (after the last DSC update?) it is worth to try out the good old SU-27 from FC!

There is a complete new cockpit look:

- Pilot is now animated in cockpit
- New MFD look
- New Flight Modell (awesome!)
- etc.
:tiphat:

I see an opportunity coming, to host a session this Saturday at 1800 UTC.
Any new modules that need to be implemented in the mission for testing?
Or are there any special wishes for the mission set (Airshow/EasyRange/HardRanger/ or anything else)?

Have to pass - plan to go on the annual "Bosseln" game of my Battletech chapter this Saturday.

Thanks but most likely can't make this one. I would have to go back to the Su-25T for a while in any case - haven't had many flight hours lately.

Interesting. It does sound 'similar' to golf in some ways. And if it's anything like the way I play casual golf, it's a perfect sport to have a beer in your hand - I like it already :)
