Gaming Digital Combat Simulator Thread

Is the difficulty a bug or a feature?

My thoughts exactly, for two reasons based on Urwumpe's hair-raising reports, but I won't go into it.

I had my first flight in the TF-51. A bit of a non-event (which is a good thing). I used the real model, with no assists. I did not want any automated gadgets doing their thing while I was trying to do mine :).

A bit of taxi practice first, and one hairy moment when I nearly departed onto the grass during that practice. Then a take off as I had planned according to my previous post on this thread. I had a brief debate with myself about what sort of landing to go for; a tail up wheeler touch and go to get a feel for the beast or a committed three point.

I opted for a full stall three point so that I would have the stick right back and the tail wheel locked centered upon touch down. I nailed the fixed distance marker aiming point, more by coincidence than deliberate precision . Apart from a tendency to drift right of center-line, which will need to be worked on next time, no real issues. Very pleasant, in fact!

Just for the record, saved the flight track and created a condensed, not too high quality, unlisted video here. Nothing spectacular.

PS: broke with the Batumi first flight tradition and went to Tiblisi for this one.

Slightly off topic, but hilarious:

Found my limits, for now. Practicing some crosswind wheeler landings, with reduced flaps. No problems with 2, 4 and 6 m/s crosswinds, but at 8 m/s (equivalent of a 15 knot X-wind in western terms) I was unable to arrest some weathercocking with rudder alone, attempted to use a tad of differential braking (while the tail was still up), and consequently touched the prop on the runway and rolled over.

Though the pilot's position reflects exactly the sort of stunt I would personally attempt IRL in the moments of euphoria after such an accident, I don't think he is meant to do a headstand on the bottom surface of the wing in the program itself!

Great success!

Flew at up to 10 km and did a picture-perfect 3-point touchdown, plus a decent take-off. Video might be incoming in the following days.

EDIT: I understand the advantages of a simple-layout cockpit, but aileron trim would have been nice.

I think I now understand why I yaw to the left when I let the Fw 190 rise up for take-off... damn gyroscopic forces of the propeller.

Seems like reading Harvey S. Plourde's "The Compleat (sic) Taildragger Pilot" is a requisite.

And pre-purchase of the Bf-109K has also been announced!

I still battle with the Fw 190  No props until I mastered this one.

And Autumn sale starts... I think about getting myself the Sabre... I still battle of the Fw 190, that's the only argument against going back to the jets I am used to.

I'll save up for now, I have enough aircraft I can barely fly as is (Mi-8 and Ka-50, I'm looking at you), especially considering that, while still far away, the Hornet will be a Day 1 purchase.

Well, I had the Ka-50 before there was DCS:World  The Mi-8 is also one such candidate there on my HDD... at least I needed less attempts for stable hovering and landing than I needed for take off with the Fw 190 there.

Also, I am not sure about the Hornet yet...maybe if others here have it and report favourable of it, I would also get it. At least if multiplayer also works out with it, because I am pretty sure, carrier operations with multiplayer would be a great source of Fun.

The news! They are many and overwhelming!

Indeed. That's quite the list! And a lot of it apparently coming in the next 3-4 months. This should be pretty cool.

Now to also wrestle with whether or not to jump into the Sabre during this sale. Maybe they'll have another emergency flash sale in the last few hours again.

The first flight with the F-86F ... take-off is a bit harder than with the A-10C, but a lot easier than with the Fw 190. It likes to climb during turns, I still need to find some visual clues about the correct attitude. Landing on the other hand worked much easier... was a bit hard, I seem to have damaged the nosewheel there, but was still enough of a plane left for rolling to the parking area.

What is pretty surprising is how quickly the plane is going from cold ramp start to take-off and how rapid it climbs to altitude. it is really fast! Also, once you are used to its limits a bit more, the plane is really nice to fly. slowing down to 185 for landing is the hardest part.
