Methinks finding one on Mars, Titan or other live-prone celestial body would be a nice start to a Sci-Fi book.

Then, an astronaut accidentally falls into the orifice, which is deeper than anticipated leaving rescue operations futile.

Yes, it could also be located in the crater Tycho or in the moon Europa, that argument has not yet been written. The place could be visited by a spacecraft, maybe called Discovery 2-1. Now that's original.

That looks more like it than windcatcher, except for the hole of course. The overall shape though, wow!

It's a copper mine vent shaft. Not sure how old it is. I think it may have been used as a setting for a very old episode of Doctor Who.
