Project Universal Car for Orbiter (UCO)

Well all the SDK testing I've done was good :) ( other than a small CTD problem, caused by my own code anyway ) It also seems really easy to use which is always a good thing

Much thanks, you used the latest lib for UCGO and UMMU right ?
But maybe you didn't tested the last copy/past of code from the last SDK doc. That maybe important to have at least one feeback on those.

Cheers

Dan

I used the latest .lib , I'll try the code from the documents now ( I'm in the middle of making a few UCGO compatible buildings )

Hi Dan.

Apologies for not using your forum, although this could be considered more of a feature request then a bug report.

The inside of the inflatable UMMU bases would benefit from better lighting. Right now it's far too easy to walk outside accidentally and die.

This should be fairly easy, by increasing the emissivity of the interior texture.

Hi Dan
I can't login to your site so I will put a bug report here.
I have gone through all the Arrow freighter training scenarios so far.
When I use the Arrow freighter and press ctrl-up it moves forward to the window view, but if I press ctrl-down my whole screen and everything turns upside down.
I press ctrl-up again and it goes back to normal.
Otherwise everything else works fine.. for a regular user.
Thanks for a wonderful add-on.
Kevin

This is definitely true.

LAST CALL

Despit the 240 download of beta I have only a few bug report and about no reports from SDK test.

I gave the ship a run quickly, I think I will go ahead and try to build one of each type of UCGO vessel. (ie vehicle, cargo, station and making, say the default DG cargo and UMMU compatible)

Right now it's far too easy to walk outside accidentally and die.

Its really fun to have say 2 guys inside the inflatable bubble, then have one UMMU grab it and swing it around so that the others die. :shifty:

Let me guess, you have some version of a NVIDIA G-Force graphics card right? Some graphics cards have settings set so that Ctrl-arrow keys, change the monitors orientation. Easily fixable, just change the shortcut keys, or disable them entirely. I bet if you did this right now that is what would happen.

At least my test of changing the window view works well.

This is not a bug, it's not even UCGO doing it. this is a hot key assigned to your graphics driver. When you hit ctrl-down your graphics driver sees the command and flips the screen.

And BJ beat me too it!

HI Dan
First i would like to say Thanks for the Great New System. This will Change Orbiter At least as much As Vinka's Spacecraft 3 does.Your Effort is Really appreciated.....I only have one problem and that is the same one that vonneuman stated in post number 1208.I also find the control setup VERY akward and difficult with the steering and acceleration keys seperated.I am sure that many people like me grew up in the gaming world using the mouse and keyboard for control and are accustomed to using one hand for movement and the other for looking around with the mouse.Having to use both hands on the keyboard to drive does not allow for using the mouse to look around while driving and takes away from a lot of the immersion of the experience.Especially for later when there will hopefully be many more buildings and roads to look as other people start building worlds and cities of their own.Would it be very difficult to just add the accleration and brake keys to the keypad 8 and 2 as well as the arrow keys for control.this would give many people a much more enjoyable and natural feeling driving experience and would leave the other hand free for other controls or the mouse.Thank you for your patience and all your efforts so far and i hope all is well both with you and your family for the coming year.

Thanks again

So you think swapping 4&6 keys for left/right arrows would be better? It may be for non-joystick users.

Honestly, if your into gaming, get a joystick, it is much better than using the keyboard. You have a much finer control over the steering and acceleration then.

To Dan, maybe a config file would be good for those that want to switch these keys.

Its an awesome step forward for orbiter.
Ive been testing it for the last 2 days and have not found any bugs that have not been mentioned on your site.
Now I've been inspired to resurrect a project i was working on some time ago and see if i can add UGCO to it.

Anyway I'm back off to build another base on the moon :)

OK, question/request for the Arrow...

The ship holds 40 some cargo. That's great, but by comparison, the cargo is small. What if I wanted to carry something bigger, like an entire station? (Like the Gas station size machine?)

I am thinking along the lines of making a resource factory for fuel, and putting it on a moon/planet. It would look similar to a oil derrick - something that obviously isn't inflatable, or able to be put in a 1.3 m cubic box. Any ideas on how to do that with the current model?

Well, I bet you'd have to cheat a bit, ie: not a giant derrick, put an heavy weight (5 ton?) OR if you confident with DLL write one that can "assemble" parts of your derrick.

I bet one "small" derrick would do the job without being completely unrealistic.

I may add such feature in UCGO 3.0 (due end 2010 or 2011 ;) ) ie: multipart cargo. If there is a missing part at unpacking UMmu will answer "missing part" else it would assemble all your parts in one object at the place of the closer cargo. (say 50 meter radius for all parts ?)

I marked almost all as solved. It's too late for minor adjustment. Now let me know if you have any serious bug (CTD) for example I wasn't able to reproduce the "PROBE CTD" (multi probe that unpack = CTD)

I answered this issue about the same way you have done: joystick.

About config file: I'm sure every user have 2-3 ideas to tune UCGO, that make hundred adjustment for me
But the main reason is that managing key is a bit of hell, doc would not be right anymore, peoples would mess key and ask support and most ppls would not use it anyway. A bit dangerous and a bit a wast of time.

Gosh ! that's one of the thing I planned a since long time and finally forgot to do.

Howewer this is maybe not so negative: Things that are poorly done always push users to make more addons  (If I release "ailantd" style base only a few genius would not feel ashamed to make some new one)

Virtual Sailor poor boat gave me the envy to make addons, Orbiter lack of sound=orbitersound, deltaglider=DGII and later, lake of life=UCGO etc. etc.

So I'll leave as it is now: a demo of one feature. The core of UCGO is good, now it's everyone job to populate the list of cargoes with stunning things.

Sorry, but you will have to wait for me testing the beta for the weekend... I have no time for downloading and testing it yet, damn work.

OK, and blame my two new books.

dansteph: Well I tested the latest SDK documents and it seems to work fine :) this is the result of my testing:

EDIT:
Image is now rotated correctly (sorry about that  )

Added to FAQ on top of my "dan's addon" forum.
link to FAQ is in UCGO doc.

Notice I have uploaded all the video on youtube, link in doc but you can also find them here:

Hey Woo, is the building a static base or unpackable cargo?

waling around and lights

ok I am a beginner : so 2 questions
Isnt it possible to walk around inside the arrow freighter ?
Can we add proper lights anywhere in the ship as in the bridge/cockpit of the Arrow - and then walk towards it etc ? I mean I read somewhere that Orbiter just allows 1 source of light which eliminated multiple stars etc...so was wondering how this add on is supporting lights.

Does the ummu actually 'walk' by animation or is it just sliding on the surface ?

Something strange happened.
When I ran Orbiter after installing UCGO, all the text in windows was a different font, most noticeable when looking at Firefox.
When I closed Orbiter, the text reverted to normal (except the very first time I ran Orbiter after UCGO installation, a reboot was required to revert the default text font for windows).

Anyone else experience this?

Would you by chance be using the Vista Boost?
