So, we'll have another double-pad event in case of an emergency?
Yep. Atlantis on Pad A and Endeavour on Pad B. Might get another dual shuttle on pad shot again.

Things continue to go well at 39A with Atlantis. Currently there's a pad clear in effect as S00024 Prelaunch Propellant Loading is in work. This is scheduled to be completed by Friday morning.

Meanwhile Endeavour is ready for her rollover to the VAB on Friday morning at 7 am EDT for STS-127/400. After spending a week or so in the VAB undergoing S0004 Orbiter Mate and S0008 Shuttle Interface Test she will be rolled out to 39B to be readied as a rescue vehicle in case Atlantis' TPS is declared unfit for entry during the STS-125 mission.

Just an update: Things are progressing so well with Endeavour in OPF Bay 2 that they're considering moving up the rollover from 7 am to 4 am on Friday. Should know the plans by tomorrow.

It was cool that they showed the rollover on the OTV cameras, they never usually do that.

Today is a big day for STS-125 prelaunch operations. Today is the day the STS-125 payloads is being loaded into one of the two Payload Transportation Canisters.

The canister will then be taken to the Canister Rotation Facility where the canister will be rotated from its horizontal loading orientation to the vertical orientation so that the payloads can be installed into the Pad A Payload Changeout Room.

The canister with the payloads will travel to Pad A on Saturday, with payload installation into Atlantis' payload bay on Sunday.

DaveS, I have a few questions about this process - just some things I have been wondering:;)

1) There are 2 Payload Transportation Cannisters - one is in the PHSF, the other in the SSPF, correct?

2) Isn't the CRF attached to the PHSF? - I thought the CRF was indeed in the PHSF's airlock?

3) Isn't the Payload Transportation Cannster that comes from the SSPF lifted to vertical at the pad? If so, why is the cannister from the PHSF lifted to vertical in the CRF?

Thanks Dave:cheers:

A KSC PAO document on the CRF: http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/nasafact/pdf/CRF-06.pdf

1)One canister is usually stored out of the way in the O&C Bldg. when it is not used.
2)No. The CRF is separate facility building, not related to any other buildings in the KSC Industrial Area.
3)No. Payloads are loaded with the canister in the horizontal configuration. Before the CRF was build, the canisters was rotated in the VAB.

MEDIA ADVISORY : M09-060

NASA's Kennedy Space Center Holds Unique Media Event

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Following rollout of space shuttle Endeavour from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39B on Friday, April 17, two shuttles will be on the launch pads at the same time at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Fla., for what is expected to be the last time.

The day's media activities begin with photo opportunity of the shuttle's rollout at 6:30 a.m. EDT and interview availability with Endeavour Flow Director Dana Hutcherson at 8:30 a.m. Live coverage of the move will be shown on NASA Television beginning at 6:30 a.m.

Media also are invited to take imagery as the Rotating Service Structure, or RSS, is rolled back from shuttle Atlantis on Launch Pad 39A and then capture a unique opportunity with both space shuttles on their respective pads with the RSS' rolled back from the spacecraft beginning at 1 p.m.

Live shots of the two shuttles will be available on NASA Television from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Video b-roll of the shuttles, including aerial shots, will be available on the NASA TV Video File.

This might be a bit silly but I never quitte understood how they actually get the payload from the cansiter ( that is in a vertical position in the rotating structure) into the actual shuttle payload bay.

Is there some document (or video) that could show me how they actually accomplish the tranfer from canister to payloaf bay ?

Well, inside the RSS, there's the huge structure called the Payload Changeout Room(PCR).

The PCR holds a structure called the Payload Ground Handling Mechanism(PGHM). The PGHM can be set up to handle any payloads, grappling them at their trunnion pins.

Once a nice and clean seal between the PCR and Canister has been established, the PCR doors are opened to expose the Canister bay doors to the clean room environment of the PCR so that they can be opened.

Once that has been accomplished, the PGHM moves toward the Canister and the payloads are secured so the load is on the PGHM and the payloads are released from the Canister.

Once that is done, the PGHM with the payloads moves back into the PCR and the Canister bay and PCR doors are closed. Then the Canister is lowered back onto the Canister Transporter vehicle which then leaves the pad.

Then the RSS is rotated back around the orbiter and the procedure to install the payloads into the orbiter payload bay begins just like the procedure to remove the payloads from the Canister.

Well that makes sense now !
Thanks for that bit of info; I've always wondered about that procedure !
Learn something new every day.
