I disagree. Neither the F-22 nor F-35 can do what the "designers" wish they could do.
The Raptor might be a capable interceptor, provided they allow it to do nothing except be an interceptor.
The F-35... Hmm, the trouble with having a plane with multiple roles it that it is rarely capable of doing anything beyond mediocre. Perhaps the Marines might be able to perform some miracles in a ground attack role, dunno. Hard to beat the what they did with the Harrier.
Until you bring in the 'Hog. Nothing, and I mean nothing, does/did ground attack and close support better than an A-10. but the Air Farce (see what I did there) doesn't want to do those types of missions. They want to go fast and far, drop some bombs and return home in time to catch the late show. Ground attack is dirty work, down among the trees/bushes/shrubbery, and many Air Force pilots I've dealt with consider it to be beneath them (with the exception of, those that fly the A-10, they LOVE them).
I was talking to a female pilot (with I could remember her name, she was a cutie), she said the 'Hog was a pilot's plane, she really felt like it was an extension of herself.
I'm as patriotic as anyone, and I've served my country for 13 years in the service. As much as I'd like to be a cheerleader for the F-22 and F-35, I can't. Both are dog-meat if they come up against a SukhoiT-50.
