The A-10 is a awesome aircraft but the last airframe was built in 1984, its an old aircraft. It will be missed, mostly by troops on the ground getting shot at.

And by those who will have to remember people who died as collateral damage. The A-10 has far lower numbers of such incidents than UAVs and other aircraft.

I wish the German airforce would buy a few A-10s instead of any stupid UAV. Sadly, the A-10 does not fit well in the German infrastructure. But there is really nothing better for the CAS role, even helicopters can't really compete there.

And what do they kill first for it: The most effective plane in the US Air Force, the A-10.

As a spaceflight enthusiast you should know that it's not about effectiveness, great design, reliability. It's about employment, obscure "First!" flights and PR.

I would add military applications but I'm not sure if technology developed for the military gets picked up by the military. Usually they develop something and are like "Cool stuff, no money, next!".

Because the Bundeswehr is so well known for its procurement competence and choices. That must be one of the things that would be better done by a laboratory mouse which presses random buttons.

Honestly, I think that the US Army should get the A-10. They should have been the original recipients of them, anyways.

That said, they're not going anywhere. They just underwent a serious SLEP, with new wings and avionics, including the ability to use GPS-guided munitions for the first time. And, they're just too damn good at what they do.

Also, just found this on Facebook:

"American fighter pilots in the skies over the Reich quickly realized the best counter to the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet was to catch it at its airfields during takeoff and landing where long engine spool up times and low altitudes negated its speed advantage. To protect the 262 bases, not only did they boast robust AAA defenses, but German ace Adolf Galland formed a special airfield protection unit called the Platzschutzstaffel that flew Focke Wulf Fw 190D-9s- the Dora 9s had outstanding low to medium altitude performance to catch the marauding American fighters. In response, North American developed a rocket-boosted Mustang to take in the Me 262s at altitude rather than run the gauntlet of airfield defenses. An Aerojet liquid fuel rocket engine powered by red fumaric acid and aniline was installed in the rear fuselage ahead of the tail wheel and behind the radiator exhaust. 75 gallons of fuel for the rocket were carried in pressurized underwing tanks, enough for 1 minute of operation that gave the P-51 a 100 mph boost. On 23 April 1945 the rocket Mustang was successfully flight tested, but the surrender of the Reich on 8 May ended the project."

Wow.

Not the shiny fancy uselessness called F-22 or the designed nausea called the F-35.

I'm not sure you're being quite fair to the F-22 or the F-35, but I generally agree with you.

The F-22 and F-35 are expensive. If a major war with Russia were still our primary concern, they'd be great. But given that I think our greatest concern is small wars with small countries with small militaries that are several decades obsolete, I'd say getting rid of the A-10 is pure folly.

I disagree. Neither the F-22 nor F-35 can do what the "designers" wish they could do.

The Raptor might be a capable interceptor, provided they allow it to do nothing except be an interceptor.

The F-35... Hmm, the trouble with having a plane with multiple roles it that it is rarely capable of doing anything beyond mediocre. Perhaps the Marines might be able to perform some miracles in a ground attack role, dunno. Hard to beat the what they did with the Harrier.

Until you bring in the 'Hog. Nothing, and I mean nothing, does/did ground attack and close support better than an A-10. but the Air Farce (see what I did there) doesn't want to do those types of missions. They want to go fast and far, drop some bombs and return home in time to catch the late show. Ground attack is dirty work, down among the trees/bushes/shrubbery, and many Air Force pilots I've dealt with consider it to be beneath them (with the exception of, those that fly the A-10, they LOVE them).

I was talking to a female pilot (with I could remember her name, she was a cutie), she said the 'Hog was a pilot's plane, she really felt like it was an extension of herself.

I'm as patriotic as anyone, and I've served my country for 13 years in the service. As much as I'd like to be a cheerleader for the F-22 and F-35, I can't. Both are dog-meat if they come up against a SukhoiT-50.

So give the A-10s to the Marine Corps, and give their F35 orders to either the Navy or Chair Force.

Wrong branch. The best place would by plain integration be the US Army. But the US Army is not allowed to have fixed wing aircraft (as stupid as it is).

That the Marines need fixed wing aircraft is another inconsequence born out of US politics.

To be fair "Send in the Army" doesn't sound nearly as great as "Send in the Marines".

Is mostly understandable... I would rather have a company army in my house, than a company Marines. Even German beer supplies are finite.

Wait, you don't have your own brewery in your basement that you've got from the previous owner without a charge? Aren't they doing that up there? Damn, poor things...

No, we only don't know how to make no beet schnapps.

10/10 would murder my inbred sister plotting an assassination on me with my uncle again.

Steam reviews are getting weird...

Then you have another reason to hate National Treasure.
Although he might have been executed for "his" crimes, MURICA!

Is it cultural differences or wouldn't Americans feel it's much more rude if you called between 9 and 10 PM than between 7 and 8 AM? Sure I'm probably getting ready for leaving but at least I'm not (half-)sleeping, right? At 8 AM I'm already awake for at least two hours. At 10 PM I'm already asleep 4/10...

"8AM"? I don't think we have a word for that here...
I know "10PM" though. That's when I start my homework.
