Weapons engineering question: how much damage can be done if one detonates 100 tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertilizer (mixed with, say, diesel) stored in trucks parked at an underground car park of a skyscraper at a downtown area (say downtown LA/London/Frankfurt etc.)?

For reference: the 1994 OKC bombing used 2.2 tonnes of fertilizer.

BTW this is for a possible detective novel project of mine. :P

Nice try, Mr. Assad. :P

Please tell us if you hear from the FBI, BfV, MSS, or MI5 on that one.

Ha ha, only serious.

Lot of variables in play on that one...

  • What kind of container for the ANFO?
  • What is the geometry of the garage?
  • Where in the garage is the bomb located?
I could go on, but you get the point.

In all honesty, I think it would blow out the bottom of the building above, and cause the whole structure to collapse a la Ground Zero.

You would get 1/10th of the strongest explosion of the PEPCON disaster. The heligoland explosion was caused by 6700 tons of explosives.

I would think PETN or Pentolite would be a much better explosive for the work you're talking about. Now, since I really don't feel like crunching the numbers, let's say you have five trucks. 20 tons of Pentolite in each. Four in the corners of the complex, and the fifth in the center. Trigger them all at the same time, and you knock out the support columns in the complex. Thus severely weakening (if not totally compromising) the structure.

OTOH, shell out a few million dollars and chuck a cruise missile at it. :P

practically, if you have the time to prepare and place explosives at the weak spots, a few dozen kg of explosive are enough. But you never have time.

Well this was an explosion of 25~ tones of fertilizer

or 100 tons of Munitions

The real issue is that 100 tones of anything is hard to ignite simultaneously.

Dear Poland,

how the hell do you have such cheap food, a kilogram of apples is 95 Euro-cent and fresh while the apples in the third-biggest german city are 3,40€ per kilogram and from last year.

Plumbing is good business.

So, I've got a flight to Atlanta on a Southwest 737-700 tomorrow. First time on both that airline and the -700. I also heard that they recently finished refurbishing the interiors of the rest of their fleet.

Southwest's not bad. Hopefully, you'll get an older crew, who actually have a sense of humor.

IIRC, Southwest has become my favorite. They don't act like a big bureaucratic entity in my experience. They don't hassle you and seem very understanding if you miss your flight for example.
When I last flew, the staff were very entertaining, they got security to stop trying to check every individual's ID (it would have been a veeery long wait), and just let us on the plane, taking tickets quickly and not bothering with the ticket stubs. There was good service on the plane, I like that I didn't have an assigned seat (just a random position in line to board), and the pilot was...very...swift to say the least. :P

Yesterday I realized that those odd-shaped two-image videos on YouTube from Oculus Rift users are not just representative of how the OR displays things, but are also like any other stereoscopic images/videos. I.e. If you know how to view stereoscopic images with just your eyes, you can get an impression of what it's like to use the OR with these videos. There's plenty of limitations, and no control, but I just don't know why I didn't realize or try this earlier. :P
I've got an OR coming 'soon' for a game I'm working on for a job by the way, but I don't know that I'll get to use it recreationally

I'd say you would need to replace the shocks and probably most of the suspension. ;)

Just saw this after browsing through some old threads

Man that was great

Damn, all the way back from 2010. The same month I joined if my memory serves me well. Damn, I've been here a long time...

Also, this:

Yes, that is a V-22 refueling an F-35, and yes the F-35 does have it's afterburner on.
