Project Orbiter Navigator

OMG Jedidia.. no need to apologize! Especially not you, i guess 80-90% of the feedback i got during the beta test so far was from you.

actualy I did, but didn't really find the time to do any testing... my wife's using the laptop too, you know

I finally got around to post again in the beta-group, posting this here just in case you're missing the post there, Mindblast. After all, it's been unused a while. you can almost smell the dust...

Okidoki everybody. I have just uploaded a new beta version and have now opened the Orbiter Navigator Beta Testing group to the public, so everyone interested can take a look here: http://www.orbiter-forum.com/group.php?groupid=57

The link to the current beta as well as install instructions and links to the prerequisite packages can be found there in the welcome thread.

If you find bugs please use the bugreport thread in the group to post them, so i have the bugreports in one place.

Yesterdays version was missing the target approach display. Heres a fix: www.nestadlinn.de/orbiter/download/OrbiterNav_0_5_3_1b.zip

A new version is available at http://www.nestadlinn.de/orbiter/downloads/orbiternav_0_5_3_5b.zip

This fixes a number of bugs and introduces a few new features:
- Display of vessels velocity and remaining fuel next to the current position indicator
- Autoconnect when starting the Navigator inside Orbiter
- Updating the current state is now also possible while maneuvers are being executed and the running maneuver can be changed in the Navigator and sent back. This allows course corrections during long maneuvers.

I have not run this before. Just downloaded it, and installed in the standard way. orbiter 2010 v100606

I didn't see any docs or readme. tried both the exe files in the "Orbiter Navigator" directory and got CTD on both of them. Fired up orbiter, enabled the module, and tried the MFD. AB and BNK buttons appear to do nothing. AA button causes CTD. The log file is empty. Scenario file is below. (attempt to get into orbit around Triton)

What might I be doing wrong?

Do you have XNA installed?

AB and BNK buttons appear to do nothing.

Well, they can't do anything unless you have a maneuver defined, which you haven't, since the application crashes.

AA button causes CTD.

That's a bit worrying, however. I'll check that out.

EDIT: unable to reproduce. I think you should try it on a clean Orbiter 2010 p1 install and see if it still does the same there.

What might I be doing wrong?

The scenario file of course shows no reference to Orbiter Navigator at all, since you don't have a maneuver defined. Currently we have to find out why the application crashes, which should be Orbiter unrelated (I'm guessing it's the dependencies, but we'll see). Could you say where exactly the aplication ctds, right at startup or when trying to connect to orbiter? also, check if you have both XNA 3.1 and .net Framework 2.0 or higher installed.

Hello jedidia,

A quote from the user's group

Got XNA 3.1 illegally installed now on Win2k, but couldn't get the Navigator to run yet. The program itself works, but the dll runns into a problem with WS2_32.dll. Probably some deprecated dependencies, have to find some wrappers for it (I got Fallout 3 and Mass efect 2 running on this OS, I'm confident I'll manage this little beasty too..)

A short question:

Is it possible to do the same with XPSP1; is it difficult and requires a fairly high level of knowledge ?

good day

??

I had to go through this procedure because I didn't have XP. I would recommend you to simply install all the service packs for XP, and you'll be able to run everything as needed, AND you'll have a whole lot of other trouble solved too...

A Microsoft OS without all its service packs is like a half finished OS!

Thank you jedidia.

I want to stay with the SP1. The install of Orbiter, here, runs well with it and, in the past, working on an addon ( a chm's viewer in full screen ), i've experimented some configuration problem with the SP2 related to javascript in Internet Explorer (the yellow bar at the top of the window ) and preffered for the moment...

But thank you for your answer.

Sticking with SP1 is just asking for trouble with malware. Unless that Javascript is completely and utterly worth the risk then update.

Or get Windows 7 which will fix many more issues.

There's a service pack 3 out for XP, maybe that'll work better?

in any case, you can install XNA pretty easily by ripping the version check out of the MSI file, but it might happen that it is incompatible with some dlls on your OS, i.e. there's no guarantee it'll work even if it is installed. There are wrapper dlls that allow you to reroute important XP-dlls to Win2k, but for understandable reasons there are non to reroute them from one XP service pack to another.

Thanh you jedidia,

i'm beginning to take a look at your advice and i've install successfully ( at first sight...) the msi file "with" the vbs vers 1.0. But as you say, it's only a first step. I'm looking to the the topic to understand how works that navigator that i've opened for the first time few minutes ago through OrbiterNavigatorApp.exe ( but with a warning message ), this to begin see the problems that can happens in SP1 with that sort of installation.

thank you again

Zachstar,

I do not really want to upgrade to SP2 or 3 or some new system ( 7 etc...). The system, here, works since three, and maybe more, years without problems and i take care of it. I think that i know it well. Win 98 was enough for me when i've run orbiter for the first time but, for some addons i've upgraded it to XP. I've not real regrets for that. But experiencing, in the past SP2 and IE 7, i've though that it was not really necessary for me. Some day, i don't know.

Hello Mindblast, Jedidia, Zachstar and...

I'll certainly install the SP2 or SP3 for that really interesting addon; maybe during that holydays.

For now, searching more informations on the forum and in the social group for it and looking for the most recent update, i see that on some pages, the links gives an 404 error for two reasons.

On that topic orbiternav_0_5_3_9b in the link works if one change it for OrbiterNav_0_5_3_9b.zip .

So, for that one:

http://www.nestadlinn.de/orbiter/downloads/OrbiterNav_0_5_3_9b.zip

On some others links in the topics ( maybe only one at least and for one or two versions ) of the social group /downloads/ is writed /download/ in the links.

Thank you again for your tool Mindblast, your ShuttleA2 too, and good day.
