This is reminding me of Phobos-Grunt.

Specifically, the frustration of waiting for ground passes over Russia to get telemetry data and communication.

I assume that Progress does not use TDRS because of cost, or incompatible formats, or both.

However, perhaps Russia should invest in some type of comm ship or aircraft to cover some gaps on the ground track. Perhaps more communication opportunities will translate into better success...

There are three Looch (Луч) series satellites exactly for that purpose: -5A, -5B, and -5V. The problem is that besides the TDRS-equivalent satellites we need to mount the compatible transmitting equipment on the stuff like Progress and various booster stages. It's not complete even at RSOS of the ISS yet!

Oh, we had them.

Unfortunately, now they are in mueums or cut into scrap metal.
Instead, we have these.

No offence intended - it's a running joke now that the Progress wasn't blessed enough before launch.

Because that image just looks intensely oxymoronic for the roscosmos' old guard..

Obviously a disguised barge for Soyuz core stage recovery secret experiments. :stirpot:

No, it is a modern mobile surface-to-air communication center.

Back to the topic (somewhat)...

Are we gonna play the "impact point lottery" again?

Reentry Roulette! Around and around she goes, place your bets! The winner gets showered with a plethora of singed dehydrated food packets and clean underwear.

Seriously, is there any probability of any wreckage hitting the ground? The Progress is normally filled with trash and incinerated on re-entry IIRC.

I pick 12 June, Russia Day, just because the irony would be rich. Location...over Russia, because that would make the irony even richer.

That's too long. The orbit is just too low to survive a month-and-a-half. Both NASA and Roscosmos ballistics experts calculate a decay window of May 7-11 depending on upper atmospheric conditions.

Well then, Victory Day (9 May) it is!

Well, then i bet on free Victory Day fireworks over Moscow.
May 9th, that is - would also be rich in irony.

To my Russian friends in the forum, I hope you know that I mean this all in jest. I know there are Russian engineers that are not happy with these events. It could (and does) easily happen to any space faring venture.

But, gosh darn it, if failure has to happen, I'd like to see some politicians get red-faced by it, no matter their nationality. Maybe they will pay more attention and devote more efforts and funds to these efforts (again, whatever the nationality of those efforts).

Пошли!

Careful what you ask for. Red-faced politicians can lead to program cancellation.

I think this is a good and fair time to do so.

I place my bets on it reentering over Moscow during the victory day parade.

"Over" Moskow might need some extra shift in inclination, though.

Moskow beein 55.75 North, while the current inclination of the Progress is 51.642
Don't know if I would be so "optimistic" about that ;)
