UPDATE 160405 : Bug fix for charred texture on 2nd stage

DOWNLOAD

A few recent updates:
Added 1st stage "centre pusher", hardback umbilicals, main engine light source effect, charred 1st stage texture after reentry.

Launch parameters, payload management, etc. now entered entered via control panel.

More realistic single reentry burn and ~2g landing burn.

P.S. Stupidly, I have neglected to make any provision in the autopilot for mission profiles such as today's SES-9 launch (1st stage reentry and landing burn only - no flyback burn), and indeed, the 1st stage landing autopilot has a hard time coping with the shallow reentry angle. So, more work to do!

P.P.S. I have been using the following parameters to look at the SES-9 launch:
Sat.Mass 5300kg
Target orbit 295x295km, 28.6deg inc.
1st stage Fuel Res.20000kg
1st stage Apa.180km
ASDS long/lat: -73.95 28.12
Disable 1st stage Flyback-EDL until 100km alt. during reentry.
(it sort of works but not really)

Cheers,
Brian

One stupid technical question there... how did you solve the aerodynamic functions of the first stage?

I just work on an unspecified VTOL tail-sitter and have the issue that the aerodynamics are extremely unstable around 180° AOA, while they are working fine around 0° AOA.

I suspect I have some small thinking error in the code, but can't find it.

Hello "brian"
super nice achievement ADDON and updated :hailprobe:

Hi Pierre :-) Thanks - I hope it is fun to use!

@Urwumpe
Hi there,
well, I don't have quite the same problem as your VTOL tail-sitter - my 1st stage only ever descends! (As it is only created at stage seperation). So it only has to be stable at 180° AOA. But in fact it is quite stable at 0° AOA.
It has 2 aerofoils defined, horizontal and vertical, with attack point at (0,0,0.1) so there's not much torque, but is stable at 180° AOA. The lift profiles of each aerofoil is symetrical along Z axis (i.e. you get the same lift at 45° AOA and 135° AOA). The Grid-fins (control surfaces) make it a bit more stable and provide extra attitude control.

Maybe worth checking lift-profiles of any aerofoils?
Or you can move the CoG down, or the aerofoil CoP up, when you want it stable at 180° AOA (more realistic anyway, as fuel depletes, I'd think).

Hope your VTOL vessel project goes well

Cheers,
Brian

Well, I think I am then back to my plan B again and will be dumping some samples of the lift functions into the log during init.

I first of all want to make sure the lift function itself is sane before going towards shifting CoP (or CoG). It should have approximately the aerodynamics of a WW2 era bomb in reverse, so I did not expect too many surprises there. But I can't yet exclude that my lift function itself is buggy, not the parameters of the aerodynamics.

Awesome addon. Your Falcon 9 gets better and better each time. I did notice that og2, og2_ballast, og2_espa2, and star48bv config files don't load correctly in the scenarios. When I copied the examples from the F9R addon into the directory they work fine. Otherwise this is one of my favorite addons to play with. Thanks.

EDIT:

I reinstalled this addon today and apparently it was my Norton Antivirus quarantining the .dll's for those above mentioned items. I got them to work this time and the addon works flawlessly. Thanks.

Thanks :-) I've probably forgotten to update those modules or something - I'll take a look.

Hi,
I had a look and og-2, espa, star48bv, etc all seem to be working OK for me.
(latest update falcon9r_v12_160222.zip). Orbiter.log doesn't show any problems. What are the symptoms when you try to use them?.

Thanks,
Brian

Updated for SES-9 launch. Now with optional EDL ONLY option for 1st Stage Reentry and Landing burns without initial Flyback targeting burn. And some other cosmetic updates.

Still having a huge problem where the CRS missions never work... don't know why

If you can be a bit more specific, I might be able to help. What kind of problem?

Nevermind... I forgot to add the Dragon DLL

So many required addons!!!

Worth it though.

I hope a Dragon V2 is in the works with the pad abort... I use your addons all the time for simulated data when I do launch broadcasts!

I also just want to say that launching this in 2016... with the terrain added, makes some fun sideways launches.

Try adding this to your scenarios (replace SLC40):

Code:
SLC40:Falcon9R_V12/slc40r
  STATUS Landed Earth
  POS -80.5771995 28.5619578
  ALT 1
  AROT 60.322 -5.406 8.305
  HEADING 10.00
  AFCMODE 7
  PRPLEVEL 0:1.000000 1:1.000000
  NAVFREQ 0 0
  PST 0.00 0.00
  TOWER 3 0.00
END

Update 160405 on OH: Bug-fix for charred texture on Dragon adaptor after 1st stage reentry.

FH to LEO now is pretty impressive, even without the crossfeed.

brianj, I have a favor I'd like you to do for me.

Now might be a good time to update your Falcon9R v1.2 addon because there were some performance changes that included more thrust to the first stage, for instance.

Here's the link to what I'm talking about if you don't believe me. This was actually announced by SpaceX on April 30, 2016 before they updated this site.

When I get around to updating the Falcons for Orbiter2016, I'll check the performance against SpaceX latest figures. Not sure when that will be as I have rather a lot of real-life stuff to deal with at the moment.
Cheers,
Brian

Brianj, in the documentation i noticed there's an adaptor for a crewed dragon. Is this a hint for a future addon?
