Gaming Digital Combat Simulator Thread

My God.... It's even more glorious than I had dared to hope.

Now, if only my computer could run DCS... And I could find someone to be my RIO... That could be fun.

I wish I would have the money to buy two new PCs ... I would then buy a new dev notebook and a dedicated stationary DCS rig.

Uhm... It's a nearly six year old budget laptop without any dedicated graphics card, just the integrated graphics engine. It struggles to run anything with a heavy graphics component.

Can't wait for my new computer.

Same here. The sand for the integrated circuits of is are already getting washed out of the mountains. Can only be a matter of decades until the first IC of my new computer will be produced.

Same here aswel. I tried DCS and the FA-18C with my old PC but even at lowest graphic settings it becomes impossible to run it smoothly when more than 2/3 aircraft are loaded..

Do you guys have any specs in mind for your new machine? I've watched Tex's video about his own new desktop (I believe the whole thing without the frills of RGB LEDs should be around 2000/2500 USD depending on what GC you buy)
What are you going for?

I'm married, so that's a little pricey. Still have to wait some.

I'm not getting another laptop, especially since I want to have a reasonable price for a decently powerful rig... I'm looking at getting a tower built.

About the same as Donamy says, I am not married, but with children.

But still, I calculate with a notebook up to 2000€ to replace my aging 1250€ notebook of 2012. A stationary rig would also be possible, but would cause new problems with children. Its better to have something that I can lock away, if not needed.

How about a mini-ITX system?

Regardins specs: I'm running an i7 4790K from 2014, a GTX 1060 6GB and 32GB of RAM (which was bought when RAM was much cheaper, hah) and it's perfectly fine.

Maybe one tier better GPU would be nice, but not essential. Anything running a current i5 or i7 or newer AMD R5 or R7 processors paired with a GTX 1060 (or possibly 1070 or the newer RTX 2060) and 16GB of RAM should do the trick perfectly well.

I am thinking of the idea to pick up a second hand 1080 which was used for mining.

The idea is that these cards are more valuable than you might expect from a second hand card. To the best of my knowledge, all electronic parts suffer mostly from expansion and shrinking when they heat up and cool down when turned on and off. The cards used by miners have been running more or less permanently. So they have fewer of these cycles.

Does this idea make any sense?

That's encouraging. I'm also running an i7 4790K, stock clock and cooling. But my video card is also from that era, GTX 970 SuperClocked. I've been looking at just upgrading the card for the time being, maybe adding 16 more GB of RAM to max my board out at 32. This should give me satisfactory performance in X-Plane 11 (extra RAM will help with the UHD meshes) and DCS until I can afford to build an updated rig.

The 970 should be more or less similar to a 1060 regarding computational power. The advantage with the newer (albeit lower-tier) card can lie in the larger amount of VRAM (6GB against 3.5GB).

The new series of NVidias sounds promising in terms of power per Euro...

Is the new RTX 2080 worth the price or the GTX 1070/1070ti can still do the job when it comes to the latest games?

AFAIR, the 2060 should be equal to a 1070 now...
