Gaming 0x10c

The programmer geek in me would pronounce it as "zero-x-one-oh-see" or "hex one-oh-see". :)

Anyway, that would have to be the most epic bug of all time. :P

I don't know a lot about it, but I know it's hexadecimal (base 16)
Apparently I'm dyslexic or the post was editing after I originally looked at it--I thought it originally said 16^2 instead of 16^12. The former made no sense, the latter makes perfect sense.

I've thought for a while they've really needed to add the Moon to Minecraft. It's hanging right there in the sky every night, and would make a pretty epic goal to try and achieve. There was a mod that added lunar transport via cheese portals, which was pretty hilarious, but overall a mediocre experience.

I'd rather the dev team stick with what games they have for now, and not get up to the ears in dead-end projects. The one strength they have is in amusing originality...very conducive to a witty reason to put Steve(?) in space, not very conducive to an unrelated hardcore space travel game. :2cents:

"You wake up by a beeping sound in the middle of a huge desert. You quickly figure out, that the beeping sound comes from a spacesuit you're wearing. It states "REMAINING OXYGEN TIME: 1 minute!". One minute later you figure out, that the planet you're on has no atmosphere and is 500° hot, THE END!" *making a bow*

I actually lol'd irl at posts about Notch abandoning Minecraft, or Mojang having loads of deadend games. Everyone, programmer or not, has had projects they've picked up and never went anywhere. Everyone is guilty of that, just notch is on twitter and you know when projects die or when he leaves them. I also wouldn't say Notch abandoned Minecraft and Minecraft definitely isn't "rotting" in the hands of Jeb, Jon and the team. Also, according to Notch he left wurm for irl reasons, shift in what needed programming, and interests in new projects. Notch could continue working on wurm only, and we wouldn't be able to hang out on Hielor's MC server. Or, Notch could stay on two projects, Wurm and Minecraft and there wouldn't even be a possibility for 0x10c.

Now for 0x10c: In regards to the posts about the phsyics, you need to remember this is a game, not a simulator. Notch didn't say he's making Orbiter 2 with scifi elements. Not surprising O-F members want hardcore phsyics, but it's a game, expect compromises for the sake of gameplay.

I'm totally excited, like really excited. Not a big fan of recurring fees, but at least there is the single player option available, and with Mojang, I'm not too concerned with being overcharged. Basically, if I could make a game of this scope, this is the game I'd make.

I think it looks cool. If I had to guess I'd say we'll probably see the first release around the end of the 2012Q3.

Maybe I'm just biased because I hate minecraft to death... For a lot of reasons, not just the development. Note that I don't hate creative in the slightest, I love the building aspect of the game but survival feels like a lot of wasted potential.

I think survival was a lot more interesting before they added things like enchanting and alchemy. Trying too hard to be an RPG.

damn, sadly I'm stuck in switzerlan with a 10 years old laptop!

Anyways, about this new project of Notch.

I think people here get a bit confused by the use of "hard science fiction" in this context. Most of us like physics, and most of us are very much into science fiction, but for gamers "hard science fiction" doesn't really mean the same as the literary genre.

Traveler, for example, is considered a "hard science fiction rpg" by many. Howard Taylor's Schlock Mercenary webcomic is considered hard science fiction by many, although there's more magi-tech in there than in star trek. The reason why it gets a "hard-sf" label (mostly from people who are not familiar with the literary genre of hard sf) because of the rigorous consideration of implications.

Ergo, I wouldn't expect too much physics from a Mojang game, but an all in all very consistent playing expierience. We'll see how it turns out... It might work, or it might not work, but I have a lot of respect for Notch as a game designer, so I'm rather optimistic.

Update about the hard science fiction of the game:

Hard science fiction. Update: GAH, NO! I'm focusing on fun gameplay instead. I still want to get corrected on glaring scientific errors, though.

Yeah, that doesn't surprise me. Physics aren't Notch's thing. "Fun" is more his style.
