Not with at will employment in the US, which is the presumed default. An employee can simply leave in the middle of the day and never show up for work again, without notice, or even saying that he's quitting, and as long as he leaves any company property, like his badge, at his supervisor's desk or with the security guard at the front door, there are no legal consequences. If an employee that does such a thing is stupid enough to provide future employers with contact information for that job, the previous employer can give a bad review if a future employer calls to ask about his performance, but that's all.

If I get this right - a company could simply go bankrupt if their employees simply go away?

And all works as long as all employers treat their employees equally bad?

Well, I'm not the kind of church-going guy, nothing against it of course, but I was nonetheless deeply touched by this, just happened in Rome:

I saw that too, it was live on national TV here.

Same here, though I did not watch it.

While I sincerely respect the pope as intelligent human, he is the boss of the wrong club.

I guess living in smaller communities is an advantage during a pandemic.

We have not locked down completely, and most workplaces are still open except from schools and childcare. Bars and restaurants have almost all closed down, and would be mostly empty anyway.

People here seem to use common sense (much more than I was expecting ) practising sosial distance. The drive to "protect" health workers and vulnerable people looks promising so far.

Compared to most of the world we have an über powered healthcare system (3 hospitals for 52k people) but the testing has been done very tactically, only testing people that have come into contact with a known case and show symptoms. And ofcourse healthcare workers and vulnerable regardless of symptoms.

The daily new cases are around 1/2 to 1/3 of what they were 2 weeks ago, and we will be extending testing to people who have had flu symptoms but no known contact to infected people. I suspect the number of cases will go up once that gets underway.

0.3% of the population have tested positive, but we haven't had a serious case yet. Only one person currently admitted down from two yesterday.

0.3% looks high, but we've tested a whopping 6.5% of the whole population.

I didn't expect the reluctance from the health minister to avoid giving the government more power to put restrictions on citizens, and most politicians seem to agree.
I guess that would change if the situation get worse, but people seem to behave exemplary.

Yey! Common sense. Who would have thunk it, eh?

PS: The surgeon general office have made a very nice page on the situation www.corona.fo but sadly the statistics have been left out on the English version. Only current situation is available in English.

Meanwhile, Switzerland will shortly start antibody testing on healthcare workers, not known yet when it may become available for public.

The economists have never been opposed to the quarantine measures, but have been pressuring for anti-body tests since before those measures even went into effect. The plan is that once the tests are available to the public, people with immunity can go back to a normal life.

My wife's mother came down with COVID-19-like symptoms after returning from a trip to Israel some weeks ago. Reported her symptoms to her doctor and self-quarantined. Her PCP requested a test, but the request was denied because her recorded temperature was 99.9F, 0.1 lower than the diagnostic fever threshold of 100F. :facepalm:Thankfully she's recovering and doing well, doesn't appear that she is in any danger of bad consequences.

The testing numbers are a joke in this country. The actual infected numbers must be hundreds of times higher than they are measuring. I think the only stats the testing provides us with is the slow exponential increase in testing.

Hopefully that means we're that much closer to herd immunity when the self-isolation orders and recommendations are lifted. Otherwise we're going to get wave after wave of sick people.

We have just hit lockdown in all but name. Early results are promising though due to our island status.

What? Yesterday your president was bragging that in the USA more people are being tested than in every other country! Didn't he tell the truth there?

He also said he wants the nation opened up and raring to go by Easter. Sadly a lot of people now think this will all be over by then, when optimistically it won't even be at peak by then.

It would be nice if Trump could be quarantined from us for two weeks without his Twitter-phone so the adults can manage this properly.

It could be six months before life in the UK returns to "normal", England's deputy chief medical officer has said.
Speaking at the government's daily coronavirus briefing, Dr Jenny Harries added: "This is not to say we would be in complete lockdown for six months."
But, she continued, the UK had to be "responsible" in its actions and reduce social distancing measures "gradually".
It comes as the number of people in the UK to have died with coronavirus reached 1,228.

Well, that's going to be fun.

And Moscow is finally on a full quarantine.
Apparently they didn't like that people went out doing barbecue once the vacation week was announced instead of staying at home.

Well, with an incredibly draconian, nation-wide lockdown with 100% compliance you might manage it, but the administration shows no signs of even attempting to do that.
