Merci pappy2, glad you like it :) I have so much fun making this stuff!

Now we only need a recoverable second stage to get a fully reusable launcher even if only in Orbiter.
I might have to play around with that idea if I get the time.

It would be fun to assemble a new launcher from the used components in the same scenario.
If someone wants to make a "Port Canaveral" add-on, I'll put an engine and an attachment-point on the ASDS so you can bring the booster back. And a dockside crane. And a road-transporter ;-D

Have fun,
Brian

The road transporter is just a slightly modified Orbiter Transporter System (OTS) which was used to move the shuttle orbiter vehicles between the OPFs and the VAB. SpaceX bought it from NASA through a General Services Administration (GSA) auction in 2014 for US$37,075.

Hey Brian was flying this weekend and just saw this update and again super job. With Sat launches once the sat is deployed thats the end but with this it keeps going. Yes a Port and transport might be cool as well.
Keep your parafoil ready if you ever do my X 38 to ISS flight. that could be used to land at EDW. Super job. I'll show this at work today.

I may have some pretty good pictures of Port Canaveral. I know I have some of OCISLY floating around somewhere (no pun intended). Last time we cruised out of Canaveral they were doing work on the deck.

Sounds like a bargain.

Maybe installing one of the "octagrabber" hold-down mechanisms I've seen in photos?

Actually the "octograbber" was a robot that would move out post-landing and help with the securing of the stage on the barge. But it got seriously damaged the last time they had a stage crash on the barge and it hasn't been repaired yet. Right now it is unknown whether or not they actually have a use for the thing or not.

I'm not sure how much Cometto got for it back in the early 80's when it was commissioned for use at Vandenberg AFB to move Discovery around.

Interesting. This "octograbber" is new to me.
Are we talking about this(not my annotations).....or is this something else?

That's it. The crawler tracks are what is used to move it around the deck. It would be hidden away in a compartment until the stage had landed safely when it would be commanded to go to work.

The launch of the TESS mission is scheduled for april 16th. I would like to run a scenario in Orbiter using the Falcon9. The orbit seems quite interesting, involving a gravity-assist from the moon.

However, the included STAR48BV kick-motor runs full throttle until depletion. I can't understand why this would be useful to anyone. I would really like an option for some more control to insert a satellite in the desired orbit.

Are there any options to do this which I might not be aware of?

That's because the Star 48Bv kick motor is a solid motor. It cannot be throttled.

Yes indeed, my attempt at a TESS add-on now uploaded to OH.

What Kyle said :)
Google for "Solid Rocket Motor", plenty infos on the webz.
You won't be needing a SRM for launching TESS on the Falcon9 - that was only needed when they were planning to launch on a much less powerful launcher(Minotaur, I think). I don't think they really need to do the three phasing orbits either, but that still seems to be part of the plan (for check-out purposes?).

Cheers,

That's great. And quick. Thanks! I'll check it out.

Not sure whether they still plan on doing the three orbits. But I would like to do a scenario which reflects all these moves if they do so. Also, they give the satellite a spin of 60 rpm using thrusters. I think that is to evenly expose all sides to the sun.

You're thinking of what I believe is called a "barbecue roll", where the spacecraft is rotated to distribute solar heating evenly. That would usually be slower than 60rpm, in my (limited) experience.

The 60rpm spin would have been used to stabilise the SRM required for the Minotaur launch (it looks like a Star37 in the video). Not required for Falcon 9 launch.

From the launch date and time, it looks like they are going for the 3 phasing orbits, even though the Falcon 9 has more than enough power to go direct to the Moon. But I haven't checked it thoroughly. Try a launch and see what you think.

A more recent video about TESS:

Hmmm. I have a little problem. Orbiter CTD's when changing ships. From the log:
000173.040: >>> WARNING: Obsolete API function used: VESSEL::CreateVariableDragElement

What am I missing?

Orbiter CTD's when changing ships.
Do you mean "when switching focus from one ship to another" ?
Which scenario are you starting from?
Which ships are you switching from and to?
Can you run scenario and post entire orbiter.log.
CreateVariableDragElement() will not cause CTD, afaik.

Scenario TESS launch 16 Apr 2018(ASDS)
It crashes when selecting any other ship, like the ASDS or the FRV.
