What about performance ? Is Win10 running "faster" than Win7 ? On a x64 processor ?

For me, yes. The upgrade was automatically downloaded to my aging Lenovo G560 on Saturday. It had been running Windows 7 Home Premium until this point, though I did have Windows 8.1 Pro installed for about 6 months last year.

Visually, it is literally a mix of Windows 7 and Windows 8. Everything seems more responsive and feels noticeably faster. The Edge browser seems quicker out of the gate than Chrome (which in my opinion isn't saying much, since Chrome performance for me has been going downhill for the past year on all my machines). The G560 is also notorious for low sound volume from its Realtek HD speakers. It was apparently a driver issue, because there is at least a 30-40% increase in the volume output in Windows 10, which I didn't see when I had Windows 8.1 installed last year. All-in-all I have a good opinion of it. I think Microsoft got a lot of things right this time.

I got the icon but is that just for reserving it or downloading it?

It says they will let me know when it is ready.

It was the same here. First it said "Reserve your free etc." and now it says "Upgrade" and that it's ready to install. I'm not sure about the exact wording of the English messages because I get them in Danish, and I'm translating "on the fly".

Yes I did that got a pop up windows saying "Something Happened, Installation unsuccessful", tried 3 times. So I may wait til it says ready.

I might try that upgrade way

Well, just installed it, so far so good. Much better than that fiasco which was Windows 8.

Now to see how my programs will perform on it; hopefully Orbiter will work again so I can get back to addon work.

I tried the update and in finally came me an error. I think my download speed was so slow. I have it on a dvd. So I might try it that way.

My installation only had one hiccup; it initially said I couldn't install (rather that it had failed). Note that I was downloading it from the"notification" and thus had scheduled it earlier.

I simply restarted my computer, waited for the notification to pop up again, and then retried. Worked that time, after a update time of ~3 hours...

Will be interesting how this fares in German law. If they attempt to go the same way as Google and declare that European law does not apply to the whole world, they might find out that this is a) a very stupid way to do business in Europe and b) Something that is only possible if you have no business customers.

Where exactly would this conflict with European law? So long as the end user signs off on the agreement, I would think you could put almost anything into the terms of service, no?

Try the methods outlined in this video:

If everything else fails, do some Googling on the error code.

My HP Mini110 netbook has lost its audio driver/device. The mute key still toggles graphically, but no audio. Lots of pages on the web about it, just have to wait till HP brings out a patch...

Other two machines seem happy.

Happened to me. Uninstalled the driver. Restarted a couple times. It brought back the driver, working.

Lucky you! Haven't really got into it yet, don't use audio, so not a loss on this m/c. Did remove device, and let it look for drivers etc., didn't do nything. Think I'll leave it for a bit and see if it comes good...

My PC randomly restarted last night when updates were apparently force-installed, and now it appears my audio driver is missing... so that's an interesting development.

Well I may give up on Windows 10. It loads and then cancels. Not sure why. I have the DVD version but could get it to load either

You could always do a clean Windows 10 install. (Granted, I really dislike reinstalling all my applications, but I have done it a few times over the years.) However, I'm not sure you can do a free clean install right off the bat if it can't upgrade your existing Windows successfully first, even if you launch the installer from within your existing Windows. i.e., it may make you pay for a license key in that case. :(

EDIT:
You could contact Microsoft support about your upgrade failure -- they might be able to give you a new key to use for a fresh install.

Well I did a clean install and now can't use my old windows 8.1 product key. Can't connect wireless either. I tried to go back to windows 8.1 but no luck there. When I rest it just resets to win 10

A Windows 10 clean install is not an upgrade. In order to get the free upgrade, you need to start the installer from within the old OS.
