New Orbiter Beta Released (r.13, Mar 7, 2015)

Question

Fresh copy of Orbiter 2014 Beta.
I'm having problems with ISS and Dragonfly scenarios. When I try to launch them the program crash.
It's normal in Beta?
Thanks!

Probably, some things do not work in the beta.

Actually I always had problems with the dragonfly scenario in 2010. Dragonfly in general always seemed to cause problems for me for some reason, even without mods...

How does the "Atmospheric Wind Effects" work?
The only thing it does is deflect the projected trajectory indicator from the direction of the nose indicator

Also, the dg atmospheric autopilot is not working for me
The terminal mfd mode just shows a blank screen, as also the custom mfd mode

The Lua Console window takes input and gives output, but the dg does not react to the autopilot commands, as if the autopilot has never been loaded
I am running latest Orbiter 2014 rev8 and d3d9 client latest beta

Otherwise, Orbiter 2014 runs fine

I think the Beta rev8 is still too buggy, still get lots of excessive spins, no 2d cockpit and graphical glitches. Anyway, I think Orbiter2014 was ment to get released in October, so maybe there will be a release soon?

The stat answer, like it has been since the beginning ... it will be out Tuesday.

Just not saying which Tuesday, which week, which month, which year. It will be out when Dr. Martin and the beta team are satisfied with it.

Hello,

I'm not sure if this has already been asked, but will the terrain be a toggle-able function? I've been messing with the beta and I love the terrain features, but I've also noticed lag in orbit that I never get with 2010.

I know that the whole point of the new version is to include terrain, but I was just curious.

TrackIR Bug?

When I was using TrackIR, I noticed that if you look to the left side (in real and in cockpit), and you move forward with your head (in the direction of the screen), even your view moves forward in the cockpit (in the direction of the HUD).

But the position in the cockpit should move more into the "direction you are looking" (left cockpit window - on my opinion). ??

This happens even in 2010.
I don't know if it's really a bug but I think yes.

No it isn't.
The goal of TrackIR is to reproduce the movements of your head, in the game. So if you move forward, the camera will move forward, in it's initial axis. Playing FSX with TrackIR (or rather, FaceTrackNoIR, but that's the same, only cheaper) makes the camera go towards the front cockpit window when I move my head towards the computer screen, no matter what.

Orbiter Beta SVN commit #9

An early Christmas present:

I've just uploaded a new beta (r.9) and a new OVP (r.27) to go with it.

To get the most of it (and to be able to recreate the screenshots on the Orbiter website), you'll also need to download an updated Earth texture tile:

http://www.alteaaerospace.com/users/martins217/packages/Earth/EarthHi_10_08.zip

Be advised that this is about 2.3GB in size. The beta will work without it, but you won't get the high resolution colour-matched textures, and the bumpy SLF runway won't be fixed.

To prospective world-builders I should point out two new tools in the Utils directory:

  • plsplit64.exe: this is a kind of replacement for pltex. You just run it, and it will ask for input. It is a bit more basic than pltex. It only generates one resolution level at a time, and it expects the source bitmaps to be of the correct resolution for that resolution level. So you'll have to downsample your source bitmaps yourself for generating the lower levels. Use your favourite image editor. plsplit will output the Orbiter texture tiles in the required directory structure. Note that plsplit64 is a 64-bit application. This does not process elevation data (for which I haven't got a tool yet).
  • tileedit.exe: This is a rudimentary tile editor. You can traverse the tile directory tree for a given planet, and see the surface, nightlights, water mask and elevation data for that tile side by side. Editing capabilities are very limited at the moment (only elevation maps can be edited for now). I threw this together to fix the bumpy runway problem, but hopefully it will be improved in the future.
tileedit is a compiled Matlab script. You will need the Matlab runtimes for R2012a (64bit) to run it. If somebody does have Matlab, and would like to improve the tool, I could also upload the script.

Indeed it is !
Checking out right now.

EDIT: This only appears on the server version. Client version opens with the old image.

That shouldn't happen. Check the bottom left corner of the Launchpad dialog. It should say "v.141220". If it doesn't, you are running an old version. orbiter.exe should be 1,684,480 bytes in size. Did your installation checker copy the right Install/orbiter.bin over? I hope I didn't miss this one from the svn commit ...

Nothing is shown on the bottom left corner except the "Launch Orbiter" button. I guess I missed that one from the update, even though I had to SVN resolve and restore it because of conflicts.

orbiter.exe is more than 2 Mb in size, but orbiter.bin is exactly 1.684.480 bytes in size. After update there was no installation checker running, but even after manually running it it did nothing.

Also, can we have a link to the new logo? With transparent background if possible; that would be awesome. Thanks :)

Hm. SVN should have overwritten your old orbiter.exe with the recompiled installation checker. I'm afraid you will have to manually copy Install/orbiter.bin to orbiter.exe.

I am thinking about dropping the installation checker anyway. It seems to be more trouble than it's worth. The only useful thing it does is catching problems with mssing VS runtimes. Without it, users may just get confused by cryptic Windows error messages, and never figure out the problem.
