Orbiter stock bases upgrade

Please download latest patch to here (fixing some missing files and CTD problems)

This add-on is meant to provide Orbiter Space Simulator with an enhanced environment regarding the default surface bases that come with the stock installation:
  • Gran Canaria
  • Hammaguira
  • Overberg
  • San Marco
  • Al Anbar
  • Baikonur
  • Doberai
  • Jingyu
  • Jiuquan
  • Kagoshima
  • Kapustin Yar
  • Musudan
  • Palmachim
  • Sriharikota
  • Svobodniy
  • Taiyuan
  • Tanegashima
  • Wuzhai
  • Xichang
  • Woomera
  • Barent Sea
  • Peenemunde
  • Plesetsk
  • Salto di Quirra
  • China Lake
  • Edwards
  • Habana
  • Inyokern
  • Matagorda
  • Vandenberg
  • Wallops Island
  • White Sands
  • Alcantara
  • Kourou
  • Brighton Beach
  • Olympus
As it is, the simulator only provides detailed environment for Kennedy Space Center, Habana, Brighton Beach and Olympus base. Of those, only the first one features high resolution surface tiles.

With this add-on all bases will display moderate resolution surface tiles (blended with the global earth textures) and correctly positioned pads and runways. In some cases the base positions where corrected to their actual placement.

The structures present on the bases are represented by the generic blocks, hangars and tank objects. They are correctly placed, although their height is in general lower than in reality. This allows for good integration with other add-ons that feature detailed launch pad meshes. As those are generally elevated, they simply cover the generic blocks I’ve placed with no visual impact.

In agreement with the general sci-fi feel of Orbiter, the generic bare pads are visible. A replacement texture for the default pad with transparency for better integration with the terrain is supplied.
This add-on is intended to be installed over a fresh Orbiter installation. If you have an installation with many surface base add-ons, you are advised to manually check what bases you want to use, or simply copy the tiles and edit your base configs as needed.

Attention: This add-on will overwrite your default bases and any customizations you have done to them

Congratulations - It was a ton of work and it's going to my Orbiter install as well as into backup package.

Will this overwrite my Tanegashima base files, in my Hll-B addon ?

Indeed, just as a note if you've installed my Vandenberg AFB addon, it will also override it as well.

Thank you for this.
This is very nice! Very nice indeed.

I did however notice that in the scenarios with the deltaglider 'on pad', the wheels are usually buried under the pad.

This isn't really an issue for me as I don't use pads on Earth, but it may be for some.

And I really like the 'landing strip' lights at Olympus!

I think this should be integrated into a future Orbiter release.

Many thanks, 4throck! You've done a great job here! It will definitely come to all my current and future installations of Orbiter (why not include it to the base Orbiter package, indeed).

Including it in the released Orbiter 100830 package isn't an option, and including it in the next released Orbiter will at least require conversion to new planetary textures format (i.e. it won't be compatible with the next Orbiter version as is, due to dropped support for surface base tiles).

Thanks for all the positive feedback.

The files have been donated to the stock Orbiter install. And yes, they will need to be converted to a new format.

The purpose of this release is to enhance the current Orbiter version. No point in depriving the community of a finished work. The next Orbiter might come next week, next month or in ten years. :)

Regarding compatibility with other add-ons:
- This will overwrite the default bases. Bases that use other file names will remain, of course, but tiles and structures may collide.
- I did test it with Vandenberg shuttle pads, with Edwards and other add-ons. No major problems if you edit the tile configuration manually. Some structures might not be correctly placed of course. But nothing that can't be corrected in a few minutes if needed.
- Of course, you can simply use my tiles for any specific detailed base add-ons you have. The coordinates are as accurate as possible with satellite images, but expect around 5m errors.
- I tried to place structures as low as possible. In general, other add-ons that feature meshes for pads and elevated rockets will cover my simple blocks and the bare pads. So no problem there.

You have done a tremendous job 4th Rock. As these are for a basic Orbiter installation they are brilliant. But as people ad more and more stuff, some bases will be overwritten. I did install the North American bases from an earlier date. Just had to tweak the co-ords for AFCs. As you said, Edwards is a great place to land the Shuttle.
I have also used the Brighton Beach files, but as I use the awesome level 11 Moon files from a link by Veterok, I had to adjust your textures to match the moon.
Using D3D9, the textures shine a little when facing the Sun, but not a problem though.
The link to these files should be permanently visible on the forum.
Absolutely brilliant work 4th Rock.

You mean all these three?

\Config\Earth\Base
\Config\Mars\Base
\Config\Moon\Base

Yes. I did try to make it clear, but since English in not my first language perhaps I should have used "bases".

Nevertheless what you have in Orbiter are several "base" folders, so I though that would be clear enough :). Backup those and you are safe.

Yes. As I always said, there are better add-ons for some bases. Or for certain pads. It's up to the user to decide what version is best for him or to use a custom config with elements from different add-ons.

There are bound to be some accuracy issues, due to the scale of the project. So I think it is normal for the advanced user to have to tweak the bases to fit a specific usage, just as I said before.

See, I didn't make, for example, a Shuttle specific Edwards. You can use my version to launch/land a futuristic vessel. Or to simulate an alternate historical time-line. Some artistic license and imagination is encouraged :) !

Absolutely brilliant work 4th Rock.

Agreed 100%

This package really does belong on the "reccomended addons" page.
