Sorry, but no. This is the fallacy that lead Lucas to put Jar Jar in.

I'm sure there's some pretty solid market research behind that. No, the original star wars movies were not made with kids as the main audience in view, but by the time we got to return of the Jedi, it became clear that kids are what turns the franchise into a gold crapping donkey. If you look at any product in the star wars franchise (appart from novels maybe, didn't read many of those), it was all mostly oriented towards kids (including the prequels). Barring maybe the Dark Forces games, and the first knights of the old republic game, but the later was more Biowares influence.

I am down with Michael Arndt. Also, apparently Nolan loves Star Wars, so I'm secretly hoping Nolan gets involved, hopefully directing.

Sorry but yes. Lucas knew exactly what he had in Star Wars, which is why he got the rights to the toys in his initial contract with Fox. The Grown ups involved in the series tried to make the franchise a more adult picture, which is how Empire turned out to be so dark and well done. Then he fired everyone, installed a puppet director, and inserted Ewoks to drive Star Wars as more of a kids movie so he could sell more toys.

Yes, and the desire to sell toys to little kids is why Eps 1-3 suck so bad. Jar-Jar Binks is the enemy of good cinema. Han Solo cold-bloodedly shooting Gredo under the table in a bar is why Eps 4-6 were so awesome.

Why not give the Star Wars movies to... me? As you all know, I'm a fine movie-making person. I'd gladly herald the following changes:

- All spaceflight now fully newtonian.

- Likewise, space combat distances pushed out into the light-seconds (no more death star trench run, sorry).

- Re-engineer the Tatooine system after the Kepler-16 system, royally messing up the famous double sunset scene.

- Ensure that C-3PO can speak Zulu.

- Introduce a far greater number of unlivable rocks than habitable planets.

- Center the plot around midichlorians, but only as a controversial conspiracy-type movement.

- Remove all humanoid aliens, and replace them with people more like this (no more blue tentacle-headed exotic dancers, sorry).

- Take several months of the production time to formulate a justification of how the Millenium Falcon could have navigated the Kessel Run in twelve parsecs, then only vaguely reference the result in the film.

Trust me. I'd be awesome with Star Wars.

Sure. Unfortunately, nobody listening to you is in the position to do so, you know? ;)

Of course you could proceed on your own and create the ultimate T.Neo version of Star Wars, but I guess the moment you publish, George is suing you to hell.

This one's fine as-is, I think--given that Star Wars takes place on a galactic scale, I think it's perfectly believable that there's a few hundred habitable planets/moons in the galaxy for the heroes to have their adventures on.

There may as well be billions of unlivable rocks, but there'd be no point in featuring them in a movie.

Already thoroughly explained: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kessel_Run

I shall use the power of the internet to profligate my megalomaniacal thoughts. :p

If one were to go to that sort of trouble, I'd rather build my own fictional universe and leave Star Wars well alone.

The SW galaxy is said to have billions of habitable planets, which is not that unbelievable, but still, you would expect many billions of uninhabitable ones as well. We've seen asteroid fields, lava worlds and gas giants, so while there's good reason for them to be paid less attention, there is less reason for them to be absent.

Perhaps it would be better to complain about the fact that pretty much every star wars planet we've seen onscreen has a single, global biome...

I'm aware of that, it was more of an attempt at self-deprecating humor on my part, referencing the fact that I often take a lot of time and effort to research details inconsequential to the finished result of my work. :p

I always thought the planets of Star Wars were very interesting concepts, especially Tatooine, Coruscant, Naboo, Mustafar, etc. I could see all those being exo-planets, even Coruscant. Heck, we know that planets can orbit binary star systems even.

who will play the charicters now?

i think its awsome tht a new star wars movie is coming out that will bring it to 8 total counting the animated clone wars. i wonder who will paly luke, han, and leia now? Mark Hammil, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher (the original actors and actress) are probably to old to play the roles now unless its many years into the future (no offence to them), you cant have star wars without skywalkers involved just like you cant have "worlds dumbest outlaws/criminals" without an ATM robbery attempt.

especially Tatooine, Coruscant, Naboo, Mustafar, etc.

Tatooine is Arakis, Coruscant is Trantor, Mustafar is... well... really any Lava planet from any Novel ever written. Naboo is a bit silly, what with having a water core. The planetary mass would have to be extremely low, basically making anyone able to jump around like Jedis...

Even worse, basic fluid mechanics seems not to work on Naboo:

Or it could be high, with a large radius, and Earthlike gravity.

Of course, then the escape velocity will be high and the planet may end up with too dense of an atmosphere.

I could see Mark Hamill coming back, he'd be about the same age as Alec Guinness was in Episode IV. A bearded and greyed up Luke Skywalker at the end of his journey passing on the torch to a new generation would really complete the saga.

I don't like so much becoming old, I bet I'd not like either see my young heroes looking ugly and doing
stupid and inconsistent scripts things (as the clamidia or whatever name they gave to this stupid bacteria).
I bet this is happening for every generation; it's hard to see our forever-young heroes becoming old.

Of course it depend if the movie is excellent or not, I can't see Jar Jar Mr "good/bad-in-five-minute" and the
tasteless Padme without the envy to hang whichever wrote the script.

Last, apart for the III, I think they often did a better job with Muppet show models than with the new
plastic CGI. Star Wars was a revolution in sci-fi movies because of the "used" looking and it seem they forgot
that also in several places.

Of course when we are young we might love bad quality things that we would not accept later. I love very
stupid sci-fi books that I've read when I was kid and I still love to read them again yet.

So I personally thinks that we should kill whoever think to do more damage to Star Wars legend but I perfectly
understand that the new generation have a different point of view.

And there is still a very little chance that the incoming star wars are good also.

No, then the core definitely wouldn't be liquid water.

Also, darthsndroids... forgot to read it for a couple of months, thanks for reminding me to read on

It's been reported, by very credible sources, that L. Kasdan is going to write Star Wars Episode 8. Deadline.com and The Hollywood reporter are both insisting this is the case, and they were 100% accurate with Arndt writting Episode 7.

If you're unfamiliar with Kasdan, he wrote the screenplay for Empire Strikes Back, and partly wrote the screenplay for Return of the Jedi. Kasdan originally wanted for the Wookie planet of Kashyyyk to be were the Death Star II would be destroyed, but Lucas wanted Endor and Ewoks.

If this is true, Star Wars is in good hands.

Also, check this out. It's fan made, but it's really well done. Makes my blood pump for Episode 7.

Well, it doesn't really matter who writes the script, because it's gonna go to a committee in Disney HQ that will declare "This is no good, it needs to appeal to X, Y, and Z demographics and needs more merchandising potential."

Then we get shoehorned love stories, cutsy sidekicks, and less mature/more palatable themes for Disney's target audiences.

Looking at some of the stuff that comes out of Disney lately, I'm actually quite hopefull. I mean, they had the nerve to give the avengers to a director with practically no name outside of the TV nerds scene...
Star Wars is a franchise that will earn you money no matter what you do . Given many of recent decisions and projects by Disney, I am hopefull that they'll say "oh what the heck, the money will come anyways, we might as well make people love us..."

Right behind you - don't look!
The SW prequels suffered from a number of flaws, among them the fact that you had no-one to really identify with. How can the audience see themselves in Jedi Knights or what basically amount to ivory-tower politicians (the Republic Senate, Jedi Council and yes, Amidala as well) who have absolutely zero in common us? Original SW had Han Solo. Remember how we all wanted to be Luke Skywalker until we met Solo?

Then, there's also the matter of Lucas not having directed a movie since 1977. His direction techniques are way dated. TPM felt slow, sluggish and you never really had a sense the characters were really in any danger. SW needs to be re-imagined the same way the Batman and 007 (and possibly Star Trek, waiting for next movie) franchises have been re-imagined.

And the dialogue... Get someone to write the dialogues. ANH came out better than intended because the actors (mainly Ford and Hamill) felt the original dialogue was bad, so they ad-libbed a good part of it. Even if you're a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away people should talk like (mostly) real people, not characters out of a Dawson Leery script.
