Are tornadoes there are just as bad as the one's in the US? There was a massive twister that passed Ringold, TX yesterday.
Not really. While they can be as massive as in the USA, we only have about 100 confirmed cases in Germany during the year, while the USA easily exceeds 900 in one year. An tornado that is equivalent to EF5 (we need to use a different scale here, the TORRO scale, because we have different damage patterns in Europe) happens about every 4 years here (but the probability of one tornado being in one of the EF-scale categories is the same as in the USA).
There are reports that about 100 years ago, almost a dozen massive (500-800 m diameter) tornadoes moved in one line through northern Germany. While almost legendary when considering the current science, the damage reports and witnesses over the large distance are conclusive.
