It is my humble opinion that Orbiter needs a theme song. (That is, if it doesn't already have one that I don't know about.) So if anyone wants to write one, (perhaps I'll try my hand at this however, never having written a song before, I'm sure there are people more qualified than me in this area) that would be great. Good luck and may the Probe be with you!

Da da da da da da da daaa da da daaa da daaaa da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da daaa

International lyrics.

I like the themes to the original Star Trek series or the theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey.
If we're going to steal a theme song from an existing source, I think the Firefly theme song would be more fitting.

That said, I think the OP was asking for an original composition...

I'd recommend the Blue Danube waltz. Maybe it's because I've watched 2001 a few times too many, but the association with spaceflight just seems natural to me. Maybe Strauss' son really did write the anthem to space a century before the first spaceflight. :tiphat:

#!

Play it while doing a takeoff to orbit in the DG4. Makes hairs on back of my neck stand up hehe.

I'm gonna agree with this one just cause it is orders of magnitude more interesting than the ones said already. I mean, trying to be at least a little original, we're about 40 years late on the Blue Danube. Might as well go for something a little less... done.

My personal lift-off song:

I get Rush's YYZ in my head sometimes during a take-off roll. That and ZZ Top's "Can't stop rockin".

Interesting idea. I think some guidelines need to be set and let me tell you why.

1--
It should not be taken from an existing 'movie theme' or be a song strongly associated with a motion picture or sports activity or anything like that. After all, when you hear the Star Trek theme you what..? You think of Star Trek! Orbiter is Orbiter, and definitely not Star Trek, or Babylon-5, or Star Wars.

2--
Orbiter is more serene and grandiose and majestic than a bunch of guitars screaming in all octaves. The theme should reflect that. It should be clean, it should have rhythm, fast parts and slow parts. It should open slow, speed up, and then drift off. Most popular music today does not do that.

3--
It should not have vocals. Voices constrain your imagination too much. The music should inspire your imagination. Many of the best themes are instrumental only!

4--
Different parts of the composition should appeal to different parts of orbiter. From the fast paced launch and landing operations to sight-seeing tours of the solar system.

5--
Perhaps an album with several selections would be best able to encompass the scope of the program.

With that having been said, perhaps a committee is needed to govern the selections.

Or you can simply make your own playlist for your own enjoyment, as I have done..

if i guessed it had a theme song, i would think it has the default song that comes with orbiter sound. what is it? air on a g-string? before i figured out how to change the list, it was all i could hear anyways. also now i can't hear that song and not think of orbiter hahah

Good enough for me, that *should* become the official song. What folks do with their own personal playlists for different mission phases & scenarios is entirely up to them. But yeh, whether good or bad, it should become official.

Yea the default music is what I identify orbiter with, but I'd be down with an original composition.

There is always Holst's "The Plantets". Although during the OFMM Mars Insertion Burn I had Mars playing by ELP, not Holst...

hey, i've thought of something already

i have a theme in mind (John Williams style), which i composed initially for a flash game (a rocketry simulator) i was developing... then it hit me it would be great for an Orbiter theme...

then i entitled it "Hail the Probe"... which seemed fitting to the context, i believed

i have most of the composition in my head, but i still need to put it down in MIDI format or something... i'll have a free day tomorrow, so maybe i can scribble up some lines in parallel to my intended plans of working on the G42 :hmm:

i think it's gonna sound really cool

Can't wait to hear it!

If you ask me, a theme song for Orbiter should reflect the idea of space travel that Orbiter tries to convey. It should be serene and majestic, yet adventurous and modern.
Just my 2 cents.
Sorta like this:
Thank you NukeET for introducing me to yet another beautiful soundtrack.
