XR2 Public Release Candidate Testing

I still wonder why it's firing the engines that causes the CTD. Why shouldn't it just choke as soon as the sim loads?

It is likely a video driver or system resources problem. Or maybe the system can't handle the high-sample-rate custom engine sounds.

I just made some test flying with JATO rockets mounted under the SCRAMs. With the help of the Attitude Autopilot I was up after 600m. That thing could even launch from our street!

Which addon were you using to get the JATOs and to attach them? :speakcool:

I've attached the scenario:

This is one sharp looking bird! Thanks for all the hard work. How do you go about changing the skin or will the skins be available in the official release? Thanks again.

The ship's skin is set via an optional 'SKIN' line in the scenario file. The XR2 includes sample scenarios for each custom skin included with the ship in the Scenarios\XR2 Ravenstar\Skin Demos directory.

Why do the passengers have the (comparatively) old space suits while the pilot and captain have the shiny new ones?

Also, why are the passenger seats always empty?

You can choose whatever mesh you want for each passenger. By default, all of the available meshes are used. If you prefer all new suits for the crew you can edit the passenger mesh settings in your XR2RavenstarPrefs.cfg file and set whatever EVA meshes you want, including custom ones.

Also, why are the passenger seats always empty?

To keep the framerate up; having twelve copies of medium-to-high poly passenger meshes in the seats would noticably impact the framerate, and low-poly passenger meshes would not meet the Ravenstar's mesh quality standards.

Thanks for the pointer to the scenarios. I still don't understand how to change the skin. Do you have to edit the scenario file itself with notepad or can it be changed while in sim. Sorry I just don't know what I'm doing.

You have to edit the scenario file to use a custom skin. Selecting a custom skin is detailed on page 69 of the XR Flight Operations Manual in the section titled Installing and Using a Custom Skin. For example, take a look at C:\Orbiter\Scenarios\XR2 Ravenstar\Skin Demos\AngelWhite.scn in Notepad or your favorite text editor. Notice line 146:

Code:
SKIN AngelWhite

That selects the custom skin to use. Each custom XR2 skin is installed to a subdirectory under C:\Orbiter\Textures\XR2Ravenstar\Skins. Notice there is a subdirectory there named AngelWhite; the directory name is what you specify in the 'SKIN' parameter for each XR2 vessel in the scenario. If the 'SKIN' parameter is not present, the default skin is used.

how about before you release v1.0 of this why dont you add a default skin line to the config file ?

Unfortunately that would be a little bit messy internally, plus it would tend to confuse newbie users about how to change the skin, resulting in "Why it isn't my skin setting working with some scenarios?" bug reports. However, you can replace the default hull texture files top_hull_colour_XR2_paint.dds and bottom_hull.dds located in Textures\XR2Ravenstar with your favorite skin textures. Or you can just create your all your custom scenarios specifying your favorite skin in the 'SKIN' parameter.

ok I was just thinking with that that you can spawn a xr2 and it would have that skin

In that case I recommend the first approach (replacing the default hull texture files). That way all your new XR2s will have the same custom skin, plus it won't be susceptible to the focus-switching-with-custom-skin-enabled Orbiter core bug.

ok then I will do that :)

Once again Doug sweet bird. I was tired of waiting for the Paint kit to be released so i converted the prototype .dds's and edited them. I now have a pretty sweet but old looking Kucera skin.

Pic in a while.

Tony.

Dbeachy, thankyou for your hard work, I am having tons of fun with this addon, It is really amazing.

A few minor issues I have encountered:
  • Sometimes when I give trim up using the mouse cursor, and then try to give trim down with the cursor again, it keeps giving trim down instead of up.
  • When you play a playback of a landing in Orbiter, the ship oscillates slightly up and down; this leads the Ravenstar to call "Wheels Up" "Wheels Down" "Wheels Up".... Maybe adding a small margin for the wheels up call would eliminate this (or maybe it's not even worth fixing this)
  • I find the airbrake slightly too powerful
Again thankyou!!
