Torpedo test sinks US ship.

Its quite dramatic, I assume its a Spruance Class destroyer?

No, the Spruance is one of the modern LEGO ships of the USA. Forms the basic hull of the Ticonderoga cruisers.

It looked like a older model, most likely a Farragut destroyer.

You are right, but the forward mast looked different to the photos of a Spruance - but it is the class which has most in common with the target.

I remember hearing about the torpedo mentioned in the story a couple of years ago while I was still on active duty.
Common Broadband Sonar System, pronounced "sea bass".
Gotta love those acronyms!

I guess they're finally going to field it.

It did go down fast, I assume they left watertight doors open, and weakened the hull?

Not automatically, such Torpedoes break the spine of the ships by exploding under them. While you can be sure, that nobody was there to keep the ship afloat, the possibilities would be limited. Right below the center, where the torpedo usually explodes is the engine room, so there will be instantly no power for pumps around. Even by closing the bulkheads automatically, the ship would sink in minutes.
