"A fire upon the deep" by Vernor Windge. best aliens ever.

"the wreck of the river of stars" by Micheal Flynn. A dramatic shipwreck story in the confinement of a hard-as-rock middle solar system, including cool stuff on solar sailing and great character developement.

Enjoying this, got most or read them. Might be a god excuse to get a e-reader for the rest, runnig out of space!

Always liked Stephen Baxter stuff, though he does get a bit weird at times, also Ian M. Banks(and the other one).

Shameless plug for Blue Streak related story:

Isaac Asimov - [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_series"]Foundation series[/ame] (in publishing order, so start with "Foundation")

Arthur C. Clarkes Space Odyssey Series (including 2001, 2010, 2061, 3001 and "The Lost Worlds of 2001") is also really good (and IMHO an easier read than Asimov)

If you haven't read any Olaf Stapledon yet, let me point you at these:

[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_and_First_Men"]Last And First Men[/ame] (1930)
[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Maker"]Star Maker[/ame] (1937)

Stapledon was regarded by A.C.Clarke as one of the finest SF writers.
The scope of Stapledon's imagination is jaw-dropping. Highly recommended!

Cheers,
Brian

Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle - Footfall.

Worth reading if not just for the Orion nuclear ship launched out of Bellingham, Washington (USA). My favorite alien invasion story of all time!

Oh totally, best fictional Orion portrayal ever. 10x bonus points for turning the Space Shuttles into gunboats. :lol:

Thanks for the tip on the Grand Tour series. I just bought the whole set of eBooks for my Kobo Reader!

You're gonna be busy for a while. :lol:

  • The Time Machine - HG Wells
  • Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
  • R is for Rocket- Ray Bradbury
  • The Golden Apples of the Sun- Ray Bradbury

All are great story, if you ask me. Once this thread dies down, I'll collect the suggestions and put them into a PDF for referencing.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.
Honor Harrington series by David Weber.

My personal literary favorites in that genre. :)

Yes, he was...
Stanisław Lem's Tales of Pirx the Pilot, some reads like Orbiter novel.

Others i like that were not mentioned before:
Strugatsky brothers - anything you can find is worth a read. For a short story try Destination: Amaltheia.

Hal Clement - Mission of Gravity. 3 g's at the rim, 700 g's at the pole, what would it look like to live on such world?

John Varley - Red Thunder. "So, how do we go about building a spaceship on pocket change?" And they did.

Jules Verne - From the earth to the moon and round the moon. No comments needed.
