So here's a small expedition I took with my K130 and USI's Kariboo rover set up as a portable science outpost...
The GTOW of my K130 was over 70 tons, just the rover itself tips the scale at over 25 tons. There is enough fuel on the K130 to go from KSC to the Poles with a max payload, drop it, then fly back to KSC, or to fly halfway around Kerbin and refuel only once for a circumnavitation.
Just landed on the ice shelf... It took a very shallow approach at relatively high speed to make sure that the vertical speed was very small for a smooth touchdown, otherwise the cargo would get upset and mayhem ensue...
Ready to unload the Kariboo rover... No bubble wrap to pop, unfortunately...
Jeb: "Heyyy Bob!? You DID measure the clearance below the cargo doors when you told me the Kariboo would fit... Right?"
Bob: "..."
In true Kerbal fashing, they raised one of the main landing gears to increase the clearance angle from one side of the cargo bay doors, and with some paint scratching (and maybe some bent stringers) the Kariboo was clear of it's air transport ride...
Nothing seemed broken, except for a flashing amber light for "GEAR LOCK STATUS" whatever that is...
Finally arrived at the "strange lights and magnetic readings" observed from orbit... Found the bodies of 3 silvery creatures... Let's check how they taste like with some bacon while we wait for the K130 to come back for supplies and to pick up science results...
While the K130 goes back south to KSC with science results from the UFO expedition, the science team
set us up the base that belongs to us...
