Gaming The Kerbal Space Program - Version 1.2.x

Per my usual update policy, I'll wait 2 weeks before updating my installation (while keeping the previous one around), just in case there is a 1.0.5.1 in a week :)

It gives time to all my mods installed to be maintained and upgraded by their authors, too.

So now, in addition to "internal" and "external" temperature, we now have "core" temperature. Great, that should really clear things up.

I created my first shuttle that's not totally useless:

It's missing RCS and a payload. The parachutes are there for insurance. Its design reminds me of von Braun's rocket.

A few months earlier, I made a munar space station, a transfer vehicle, and a reusable lander:

Apparently that many solar arrays aren't necessary. But my Kerbals think it's just fine.

UPDATE: I have deployed Eve's Magellan.

The Steam controller is now supported by the game (a patch with a plug-in for it was released today), of course if you have the game on Steam.

Agggh! I teach thermodynamics and heat transfer...somebody needs me to hit them with a hickory slide rule, soon! Let me at 'em!

So here's a small expedition I took with my K130 and USI's Kariboo rover set up as a portable science outpost...

The GTOW of my K130 was over 70 tons, just the rover itself tips the scale at over 25 tons. There is enough fuel on the K130 to go from KSC to the Poles with a max payload, drop it, then fly back to KSC, or to fly halfway around Kerbin and refuel only once for a circumnavitation.

Just landed on the ice shelf... It took a very shallow approach at relatively high speed to make sure that the vertical speed was very small for a smooth touchdown, otherwise the cargo would get upset and mayhem ensue...

Ready to unload the Kariboo rover... No bubble wrap to pop, unfortunately...

Jeb: "Heyyy Bob!? You DID measure the clearance below the cargo doors when you told me the Kariboo would fit... Right?"

Bob: "..."

In true Kerbal fashing, they raised one of the main landing gears to increase the clearance angle from one side of the cargo bay doors, and with some paint scratching (and maybe some bent stringers) the Kariboo was clear of it's air transport ride...

Nothing seemed broken, except for a flashing amber light for "GEAR LOCK STATUS" whatever that is...

Finally arrived at the "strange lights and magnetic readings" observed from orbit... Found the bodies of 3 silvery creatures... Let's check how they taste like with some bacon while we wait for the K130 to come back for supplies and to pick up science results...

While the K130 goes back south to KSC with science results from the UFO expedition, the science team set us up the base that belongs to us...

The new "Juno" jet engine defintively allows interesting low-tech designs. Here a suborbital spaceplane equipped with 3 "Juno" for takeoff and landing, and a good old "Swivel" rocket engine for the ascent leg. The takeoff is really painful as the 3 jet engines develop less than 60kN for more than 12 tons, but it flies ! Perfect for missions like carrying suborbital space tourists or performing surveys at altitudes that can't be reached with simple jet engines. A moneymaker, provided I can land it in one piece on that awful "Level 1" bumpy strip of dirt they call a runway !

Yeah... Those Junos are surprisingly practical. Two of 'em with a pair of Mk0 LF tanks and a Mk1 LF tank give you enough range to go a quarter of the way around Kerbin at 3 km and Mach .8+, then back to the KSC, without refueling.

You can always fit a ballistic parachute for emergency situations and at least save the vic...ehm, clients. :)

I like the new Mk 1 cockpit, but I wish that they would have left the original and added this as a new part and not a total replacement. At this point, the stock parts are pretty much iconic and replacing them is counter-productive, IMHO, even the new parts are a little fancier.

Same for the J-33.

Agreed. But I'm sure someone out there has saved those parts, and will be releasing a "legacy parts" pack of some sort...
That said, the thrust reverser on the J-33 is a nice touch.

Since Space Engineers is giving me ire, it's back to KSP.

It's been far too long. :)

This isn't exactly stupendous compared to my previous efforts at interplanetary vehicles, but the design feels fairly solid, and it's much easier on the frame rate. I should be heading out to Duna for a relearning session in the near future.
