BIG BEAR LAKE (KTLA) -- After a year of record rain and snow fall, officials at Big Bear Lake are being forced to drain the dam for the first time in 15 years.
The lake is so full that winds are cresting water over the 74-foot dam, soaking neighboring businesses.
Last Wednesday, the water level at the lake registered at 72.30 feet -- just one-third of a foot shy of the maximum level.
Most lakeside beaches have been underwater for weeks. Locals have even reported fish swimming in a pond near the Big Bear airport -- which abuts the east end of the lake.
In 2010, Big Bear registered a total of 64 inches of rain and snow, the fifth highest level in the last century.
April has already seen 6 feet of fresh snow in nearby mountains.
Officials will be draining small amounts every day from the lake. They say there is minimal risk of flooding to nearby homes because the drainage system links to the Santa Ana River.
This years marks the 100th anniversary of the dam's construction. The last time it was drained was in 1995.
