Some members and friends of my classic table-top battletech chapter already play Mechwarrior:Online for some years, not sure if this will get more interesting.

Its coming out on Steam too, will have a look when it arrives.
I remember a pc version from way back on a cd. 2D battlefield I think.

There is a free Java implementation of it, called MegaMek. Its really nice if you have no better way to play BT:

• On a large solid table
• with flat standard hex maps or a beautiful terrain
• With good friends, regardless if they are in your unit or your opponent
• With enough time
• With some BBQ and beer
• With absolutely artful painted mech miniatures

But MegaMek can also be interesting with some other tools. I remember there is an software build around MegaMek that allows you to handle detailed logistics of a mercenary unit according to the Mercenary source book rules...
