SR-71 development

Did the Blackbird every get scorched up bad enough for markings on the wings?

Peek temperature on the wing nose is about 300°C, not enough for scorching. Only the divergent part of the nozzle gets slowly white glowing when reaching full thrust.

Can textures be rendered too? I can get a texture for that so when you go into external view you can clearly see the glow of the heat. It may not be that big of a deal though.

I think this could be done much better without textures, by just using a special material for the nozzle.

Fine with me. Right now I kind of don't feel like working on meshes so I'll start it tomorrow morning. I might have to scale the mesh down too. Got a lot of work to do, but when it is done it will be a great addon.

Ok, I have an exam tomorrow, after that I can slowly start preparing things for making the module.

I think I will also include an attachment point on the back of the SR-71, for transporting drones and other payloads, an animation of the drag chute would be needed.

Sounds good. BTW, what is your major?

Well, as major does not really fit to the structure: Computer science, with specialization on spaceflight technology.

That's pretty cool. Good luck on the exam.

Will we need to make a special manual for the flight plan?

My personal experience is, that an add-on is only as good as the manual that comes with it. So a good package, ideally in the style of the X-15 add-on, would be a good idea. If you want to be really cool, also put a DVD case template and a keyboard summary sheet into it...

But I don't know if I can do the full astronavigation system in just two weeks of "holidays", the basic stuff like the performance of the engines would fit in the time, also making the primary flight controls in the VC.

My conservative estimate for implementing the full magic of the astronavigation system is 6 months - it is really powerful and complex.

That's fine by me as long as it is accurate. I think we should save the manual for last though. I'll dig up detailed pictures and flight plans to include in the manual as well. It took off from Edwards, right?

This great what you are doing. I'm looking forward to this.
This idea with the ejection of the UMMU would be a cool feature.

Thanks. Just know that this will take some time to fully develop.

I recommend doing it with the development, this makes it harder to miss something. You just make the final editing before release.

The NASA SR-71s flew from Dryden, but the military missions had been closer to the front line initially: Beale AFB; Palmdale, California; Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan; and RAF Mildenhall, England.

During the second era it also flew from Edwards.

I'll be doing that then. If we could, we could have someone make tiles and runways for each base it was deployed to. Maybe not, but it could happen.

Let me try and finish my X-2's animations and then I'll start the layout and structure of the manual.

Yes, but I would need to test something for that: Is it possible to transfer crew from vessel to vessel in the same time step and without docking port?

Wouldn't it be in the DG-IV SDK?

No, it is a UMMU job, the DG-IV makes the ejection much simpler. ;)

I would need to look closer at the UMMU SDK for that, I think this can be done.

Also, it would be really nice to have the MANY engine doors animated... would be the animation to turn the SR-71 into a living beast...
