About a year ago I had a conversation with Glider, estimating the power required for a pusher-type launch abort system. Now I read the story about SpaceX testing their first 'SuperDraco' abort engine:
"Eight SuperDracos will be built into the sidewalls of the Dragon spacecraft, producing up to 120,000 pounds of axial thrust to quickly carry astronauts to safety should an emergency occur during launch," said Elon Musk.
120,000 pounds translates into 120,000*0.454*9.81/1000 = 534 kN
Looking at our conversation about a year ago the estimation was:
Vertical thrust F = 540 kN (7,500 kg x 72 m/s²)
I would say that was right on the money
___
btw: Thank you Glider for your awesome addon!
