Why do people do this?

I never quite understood the reason why someone gets the idea to take a pair of shoes and toss them on a power/telephone line.

I've heard they are of spiritual value, a sign of connectivity between all the users of shoes and Nature. There is one near my house.

Perhaps you should have read the wiki article you got those images from.

I always smile when I see that. It's quite an art to get them up there and to hang evenly. The longer the laces, the better. I think positive about seeing a pair hanging from phone wires. I wonder how many birds fly into thin lines and maybe a good pair of size nines would help to maintain the bird population.

When I was growing up it was just something fun, kids did it, I did it... I would say everyone did it, but a few did not.
Now though my niece told me it's indicative of a drug-sellers house (crack mostly).

I've never understood this phenomenon.

Around here (Texas) ive always heard that meant someone recently got beat up, and whoever it was threw their shoes up there. That is what people used to say way back in high school oh so many years ago.

My partner tells me it indicates that a drug dealer lives there. This was news to me, but I suppose I should expect this now that I live in Liverpool.

Before that, I suspected they just indicated that some immature kids lived in the area.

None, they can see it just fine. I see birds sitting on these wires all the time.

It is one of those things people do because it is fun and then try to attach some deeper meaning to it later. I put a pair of mine up (After about thirty tries) at my old university town. I can claim I was trying to leave a part of me behind or whatnot, but really I was just cleaning out my closet and thought it would be an interesting thing to do.

As far as drug dealers go, I have never heard that about shoes on power lines. But I know if there are a pair of shoes on the roof of a house that means there is a drug dealer there.

i was told that when a kid died their sibling or cousin threw the last shoes they wore on a power line to symbolize to jeebus that the deceased led a good life

While actually the survivor isn't - throwing stuff on power lines doesn't really qualify as "leading a good life" and I have a feeling firing off a flare could actually work better.

I would rather see my survivors have a party like its 2099, than vandalizing some power lines. If nobody is there except the usual depressed sights, I would rather come out of the grave again and celebrate my own life and afterlife.

And I insist on leaving my tour of duty in the world of the living by the tunes of the "Black Bear".

I see shoes on powerlines all over my suburb - here, I think it's just one of the many dumb stunts teenagers do

I didn't believe that the shoes indicated a drug dealer lived there, until I saw a drug deal going on below them.

What surprises me is that the police/local council don't remove them!

I never seen something like that. Must be an English-American custom... :hmm:

I personally know several detectives here in town and they alwas told me that in the past this was a low-key sign that drugs were sold at that location.

Nowedays however it sees to be moreof a fad; hopefully it doesn't mean a drug-house every time..................:shifty:

It surprises me that drugs dealer would be so uncautious... I mean, police has just to wait the corner with a pair of binoculars...
