Software Reoccurence of the "Blue Screen of Death"

Hey everyone, i have recently having problems with my computer. The problem is every time I turn it on I get the blue screen of death, this never happened before (the error says a certain program is stuck in a infinite loop).

Is there anyone with any suggestions?

i just get to the point where the user name icons show then it happens, it seems the problem is "nv_disp4". Does anyone know what is this program?

Ok my computer is offically dead .
So i decided to download orbiter on my personal computer and after a day, the same blue screen with the same error: "nv4_disp" (its in an infinite loop). I wouldn't think the computer is incapable of handling orbiter since it has 3gb of RAM and a video card that has 512mb of space. What could this be??

P.S I removed orbiter and the problem has stopped ...

What site are you downloading Orbiter from? Could this be a corrupt download?

Did you install any add-ons? If so, which ones?

I downloaded it from : http://www.orbiter-forum.com/download.php (the ZIP file not web installer).

And the addons were: Orbiter Sound 3.5, NASSP - Project Apollo, ENERGY Project, IMFD 5,1q, Aerobrake MFD, LOLA MFD, and DGIV.

I have always used addons while using orbiter, so i don't know. I have found the latest NVidia driver for my main computer (but it is absolutely "fried" so i can't get the drivers downloaded), and I am currently downloading the one for my personal computer.

But my main concern is my main computer, windows is still operating so I know the harddrive hasn't crashed. But how can i get the drivers with my computer in the state its in (utterly useless )?

After i removed orbiter on my personal computer the problem stopped, but it also may of stopped because i updated my driver. But my 2nd computer (my main computer) has the problems, since after windows loads it goes straight to the BWOD.

Try the following:

1. Turn on your "main" PC.
2. After the manufacturer's logo appears, start tapping F8
3. You should see a menu of boot options. Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and hit Enter. Your screen will fill up with a bunch of text. This is normal. It may take a bit for Safe Mode to load.
4. If needed, choose a user icon and log on with password if necessary.
5. Once the desktop loads, Click Yes when prompted to continue in Safe Mode, then right-click your My Computer icon and select Manage
6. Select Device Manager on the left pane
7. In the list of devices on the right, expand Display adapters
8. Right-click your nVidia display adapter and select Uninstall. Click yes at the prompt.
9. Reboot your PC and see if you can get past the user icons

This will force your machine to reinstall the display drivers. If it works, immediately go to nVidia's website and download the latest version.

Have you made any recent changes to your computer before the BSOD problem started (new drivers, new programs)? If so, load an older restore point, and start adding things back, until you can isolate the problem.

Is this Vista or XP?

I have tried going into safe mode and the recovery disk and both don't work (I still get a blue wall of death and sometimes the screen just "blinks") im beginning to think the video card needs to be replaced

Are you able to enter the BIOS (press either the delete key, or whatever your motherboard requires)? If you are able to enter the BIOS with no problems, then its most likely not the video card, but rather the way.

Also, Is your video card on-board, or is it a separate card? If its separate, does your motherboard have an on-board video card?

If you have both an on-board video card, as well as a physical video card, try plugging your monitor into the other one, and testing. If it boots to windows with no problems, its the video card. If you have the same problem, its the drivers.

If you only have a single video card, see if you can borrow another one (perhaps out of the main computer you mentioned). Same premise, if you can get into windows, its the drivers. If you can't get into windows, then the problem may be more serious.

Ok, ive switched cards between computers and I can get into windows on the "problem computer" but since the video card on that computer is pretty expensive, i want to be able to fix it without buying a new one. Is there anyway that i can download the drivers for it with the lower end card in the "problem computer"?

Yes, you can download the latest drivers using the older video card. However, it may not solve your problem. My theories are that you either have a corrupted driver, or a broken video card. Try these steps:

1) Keep the working video card in your "problem computer".
2) Download the latest drivers, but DO NOT install them.
3) Follow n122vu's steps to uninstall the video card drivers.
4) As soon as the drivers are uninstalled, shut the computer down, and re-install the "Problem Video Card".
5) Power on.

If you are able to boot into Windows correctly, let it sit for a little while (I'd say 5-10 minutes to make sure it wont Blue Screen again), then install the current drivers and reboot. If you are able to boot back into Windows, then your problem was the drivers.

If you are still getting a Blue Screen before you go into Windows, then your problem is probably the video card, although if you'd like to be sure, you could try uninstalling the drivers, then reinstalling them in safe mode, although I don't know if that would do any good.

Let me know how it turns out.

Ok I have done what you put together, but I am still getting the BWOD right after windows starts, so im pretty sure I need a new video card. Thank you for the help though

Not a problem. Luckily, if your card is within warranty, you should be able to get a replacement (ideally anyway). If its not, Newegg usually has some good prices.
