It's time once again to "Fly Low, Go Fast, and Turn Left!" The 2013 Reno Air races are underway at Stead Airport, and this year promises plenty of excitement, even without the Thunderbirds or other military displays.
As always, the main event, the Unlimited Class, is proving to be exciting from the start. Strega (race #7) is being flown by a new pilot this year, as Steve Hinton Jr. bailed over to Voodoo (race #5). Strega has also lost a canopy during qualifying, a rare event at any point.
Voodoo has turned in the fastest time so far, a scorching 491.587mph, leaving Voodoo on the pole for the first time in a LONG time. Hoot Gibson is close behind with a 479.164mph lap, and Rare Bear is still in the hunt for yet another title with a 473.105mph lap. And that's only the Wednesday races. Who knows what else will happen before the big race on Sunday?!?!?
Gentlemen, WE HAVE A RACE!!!!

OK, update for Thursday...
No Unlimited runs today, but the pairings for the Silver Heat #1 have been released.
Also, if Voodoo was NOT full out during qualification (most likely the case), then they have a great chance of breaking the record for the Unlimited Class of 499.160 set by Strega and Hinton Jr. two years ago.
Formula 1 ran four heats today. Leaderboard is being dominated by Cassutt III-M aircraft.
Biplane class saw a new course and class record set, at 254.243 mph, flown by Phantom. Again, 4 heats today.
Sport Class ran 4 heats. Glassairs IIIs are doing well, as are Thunder Mustangs. Current leader of the class pulled a 390 mph lap today. That's faster than some Unlimited birds.
Jet class did two heats today. Current leader is Just Lucky, a L-29 Delfin, with a 500 mph lap.
