Since I only joined in 2008 and don't know M6:
  • was M6 centered around Orbiter like this forum is?
  • why was M6 called M6?

M6 was a relatively cheap internet provider, not sure if it still exists. The forum was just hosted there. And it was called M6 because.

Can't find anything recent of them, but I get the impression they are now part of Orange.

You know, now that you asked it, I find that I always asked myself that but wasn't aware of it!

The first time I heard the forum M6 in this forum (I think it was in the early days when I registered, to find information), I thought it was something that had to do with the MI6 (as well as a fan club).

The m6 boards suffered from poor maintenance on the provider's part, IIRC, and basically crashed horribly at one point, leading to the mass exodus to Tex's OF where we all are now.

At the time, I was a moderator on the m6 boards, and for a long while Martins kept it up for reference only, no posting. I never lost my mod privileges, so I could hunt around in it pretty easily, but at some point it just seemed to stop working all together, maybe Martins just quit paying the fee or something.

Meanwhile, the initial move to OF had some hiccups, as somebody got here before some of us and registered with other people's usernames to start whining about things and stir up trouble. At the time of the Great m6-o-clysm, m6 was having a lot of problems with trolls and so forth, but Tex managed to lock things down here pretty quick.

ar81 was, well, shall we say, kind of a volatile personality, and so were some of the others on my list.

I do wonder about Art sometimes, I think he actually bought the rights to Star Frontiers from TRW when that company collapsed or something. I used to play that RPG growing up and me and my brother still have the box sets and a few pewter miniatures.

I may be going to Cape Canaveral for the MUOS 5 launch next month!

Other people's usernames? So there were multiple incidences of that? One of the first things I remember after getting here was a thread where "Urwumpe" had gone off the deep end, and had been renamed to "Banned User". I remember being quite shocked by that, as Urwumpe had (and has since) always been quite stable. Then I found out that the banned user had been impersonating Urwumpe, and had been banned for exactly that, and everything made a *ton* more sense. But your post seems to imply that impersonation was a broader problem than that one incident.

Anyways, I think the basement does its job well as far as keeping this forum (even the basement) civil. The tone of the community took a dramatic turn for the better after that was implemented.

Maybe the Urwumpe imposter was the only one, I don't really remember exactly. I thought the guy was sockpuppeting a couple of accounts but I may be mistaken.

After M6, everyone except you was replaced by puppets. We've just been keeping up the facade all these years.

I think now, that the secret had been leaked, this explains it all. I am really sorry, but the union did not allow a full impersonation.

Beautiful Château Frontenac this morning while going to work. Note the highest roof was remade about a year ago, and the copper is already oxidising magnificently.

Same here - something was before M6, AFAIR.

Dan's forum goes back a ways: http://orbiter.dansteph.com/forum/index.php?topic=9643.0

This is the earliest I can find information about Orbiter, called "Orbit" at the time, on the internet.

https://web.archive.org/web/20000511090310/http://www.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/~martins/orbit/orbit.html

The first mention of M6.net is on April 3rd 2001(but no forum yet)
https://web.archive.org/web/20010407203937/http://www.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/~martins/orbit/orbit.html

And then the M6 forum shows up on May 9th 2001: https://web.archive.org/web/20010611150735/http://orbit.m6.net/discuss/philboard.asp

Someone should add all this stuff to the Wiki...
