The parking lot was 11 degrees (f) and the humidity is pretty low, so when I was in the lee of the buildings it wasn't too bad. But getting felt up by the wind was really numbing. Well below zero as the winds were gusting to 25-30 mph.

The kid had knitted me a 4th Doctor scarf for Christmas, it was a timely gift (and she's awesome!).

I can understand it, last weekend, I decided to take my bike out for a small tour to begin the new year... 5°C, similar gusts. While the many layers of clothing protected pretty well, the parts exposed to the strong wind still cooled down so quickly that I decided to abort halfway and save my kidneys.

It got down to about 9F in the DC area this morning. My house is in "protective mode", with water trickling and the heat turned up to make sure I don't freeze a pipe. I flooded my basement a few years ago from a frozen pipe and it scarred me for life. I'd much rather take a hit on my water and electric bill than have to relive that nightmare.

I have a theory that as soon as the USAF saw what that plane looked like it had already lost the flyoff with the F-35 before it had even begun, because the USAF doesn't like to fly ugly planes. And the F-32 is one ugly mother:censored: plane, while the F-35 is relatively cool-looking. The actual flyoff just sealed the deal.

The US Navy, on the other hand, will fly any hideous aircraft as long as it meets requirements, just look at the A6 family of jets, so ugly they go full circle and become almost cool.

We are enjoying the calm before the storm, for this weekend, we are warned of 11 Bft (115 km/h) gusts in the low lands and up to 140 km/h gusts at the coast or on mountain tops.

If you lived here for a year you'd learn to live under those circumstances. Last December I was on my way home after fixing storm damage, and I met a group from the kindergarten out on their daily walk. By then the storm had weakened to 25-27 m/s (90-97 km/h).

PS: A quick look shows the strongest gust right now at 32 m/s (115 km/h) but I suspect it might have been worse this morning.

The problem aren't the locals here. We have likely the same standards for wind speeds as you have:

"If the sheep have no curls, you have wind. If the sheep fly, you have storm."

But then, you constantly have people who are surprised that their heavily overloaded truck is thrown on its side by a bit of air...

A6 ugly? From which side it's ugly?

Does anyone know how to make a good Orbiter video? Fraps just isn't working right on my computer...

DxTory is an alternative, though I hear it can be quite a pain to set up properly. That said, I've been hearing that from peeps that aren't exactly skilled with computers. Let's players and such :P

I should have mentioned that today is quite a normal winters day. A bit windy but not considered a "storm". The worst station showed 28 gusting 43 m/s for this morning. It's a mountain pass with a road going through, so be careful because the road is icy!

The "official" weather stations are mostly located close to towns or villages, and hidden away from the worst weather. We used to have an early warning radar station where the radomes were on a mountain top and the base in the valley below. It was quite common during winter storms that the crew was stuck for a few days in the bunker below the radomes because the road to the base was closed by weather. There were several attempts to get continuous weather data from "the top" but only once the sensors survived for over 12 months before it blew away. During that time the average wind speed reached 50 m/s five times. The official stations only reached 50 m/s twice since 1961.

While I appreciate the help, the link isn't working (at least for me).

I'm not exactly skilled with a computer. :(

What do you mean by good? Good quality without FRAPS? I haven't looked into alternatives for years.

The problem I have with Fraps is that it just makes 2 second-long video most of the time; the longest was 30 seconds (I aim for around two minutes for a video). It seems to have a mind of its own at times. It might be because of the hotkey, but I'm pretty sure that I'm not supposed to press down on it for the duration of the recording. You CAN do that for pictures, though.

I'm not a registered member yet, maybe the "free" Fraps has limitations?

If you have an NVIDIA GPU I suppose you could try ShadowPlay? Works for me with Orbiter to obtain clips.

From which side isn't it? I love the A-6, and it's sister the EA-6B Prowler (aka. "Sky Pig"). Part of what made them cool is their utilitarian ugliness. These things were not built to win beauty contests; they were built to deliver insane amounts of ordnance to targets under all-weather conditions, and did so for many decades.

F-104s are sports cars. A-6s are diesel trucks. One looks pretty. The other gets :censored: done.

A-6 can carry a whole crapton more ordinance than an F-18. The EA-6B physically hurt to be near when under tension it was so loud.

EA-6B Prowler. Enough jamming power to make you pee your pants and forget your name for a half hour after a low fly-by.

Here's one for you. The Prowlers uglier cousin, the ES-3 (Shadow). Freakin' avionics cooling fans are louder than the engines.

We had one as a prototype when I was at VX-1, ours had a football on the vertical stab IIRC.

Funny, I never thought of the S-3 as ugly. I actually think of it as, well, "cute" in a way. Almost like a VW Beetle in a world of Camaros and Firebirds LOL. And yeah, the engines are so quiet on those, and the small size of the engines adds to the "cuteness".

I guess they weren't so cute if you were a Soviet submariner, though...

Maybe not "ugly" per se. I just didn't want to get too close too them as I was afraid the NEC would jump out and get me. I liked my helicopters. Smaller flight deck means that their was only one aircraft at a time that could kill me. I was either on it, in it, or looking at it.

That's one of the prototypes! It still has the vectoring exhaust pipes to help with flight around the boat!

Current record speed (Friday, 13:00 CET) at the Brocken mountain: 162 km/h gust, 94 km/h average.
