A-10s are not pretty, but they are not Navy-ugly like the A-6. I think the A-10 is very well-proportioned and looks great for a plane that is designed to be basically a flying tank.

I think the only reason the USAF agreed to fly it was to make sure the US Army didn't talk Congress into letting them have some fixed-wing jets again...the operation of fixed wing planes is jealously guarded by the Air Force, who to this day have still not gotten over the divorce with the Army in the 1940s. They lobbied Congress into allowing the Army to have only rotor wing aircraft, aside from a few spotter planes and VIP jets.

Fortunately the Navy and Marines play nicer together when it comes to aviation, and it works out even better since Marine aircraft are all part of the Navy's maintenance and supply system and many of the parts and technical skills are interchangable. All Marine pilots are actually Navy-trained and Marine Corps air units frequently "plug into" Navy units and act as part of the carrier air wing when needed.

Indeed. The Navy and Marines are very tight and share many resources. I have a close friend who is a combat vet, retired Navy Corpsman. He was assigned/embedded with Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. Still stays in touch with the ones that came home.

Hey guys, how big can an add-on documentation be? Working on one, and I kinda wanted to, um, overdo it a bit...

Also, why do people think the A-10 is ugly?

It's not ugly, if you look at it from the right standpoint... It's beautiful if you're trying to make a plane do the same job as the A-10. It's aerodynamic where it needs to be, and it's a brick where it doesn't.

It's hard to beat the 'Hog for close air support. Even harder when they operate in groups of three, that's a bad time to be a bad guy.

In other news, I've managed to NOT find myself in upper containment tonight. Which is good, (one) it's hot in there, and (two) there are way too many stairs to climb to get to the ice condensers.

Right behind you - don't look!
Funnily, the current storm in Germany got the name "Elon" and is much stronger than expected. Is that an omen for the launch tomorrow?

Maybe. Does the air have a musky smell?

Ugly? I think it's awesome. People think the LM is ugly, I don't think so. It performs its function admirably well, which is in itself a form of beauty.

Of course it is ugly. It is so ugly, tanks explode in horror when they see it.

If you go by the past prejudices of now happy hog pilots, on the day they got assigned to a A-10, many of them hated to fly the A-10 because it is stubby-nosed, slow and handles like a pregnant cow on a good day. Most of them dreamed flying pointed-nosed supersonic fighter jets.

But after flying it, they have become converts, because this very functionally designed jet does things that the pointy-nosed fraction can only dream of. Alone in terms of efficiency, number of sorties flown in a week or plain love of the army soldiers.

The typical 8 hour day of an pointy-nose pilot: Fly four hours to the target. Drop bombs. Fly four hours back.

The typical 8 hour day of an A-10 pilot: Fly a one hour to the targets, fire weapons, head home for picking up new ammo with running engines without leaving your jet except for a short stop at the restroom, return, look for targets you missed, refuel in the air, look for new targets, head home to pick up new ammo, return to the target box, ...

That sounds more interesting and less boring...though i'm curious, is it hard to aim the GAU-8 if say, your targeting computer of some kind is damaged and you can't use it?

Oh damnit, sorry...I had little sleep for the past few days...,

The only thing that is comparable to something like a targeting computer is the IFFCC, the integrated flight and fire control computer. Without it, you have no HUD and the MFDs will display nearly nothing, firing any weapon except the gun gets impossible. You can still use the gun though, but aiming is a lot harder.

But still, a only few switch throws are needed and you have every system ready to bring you home and exchange the damaged IFFCC LRU.

So they confiscated my Nutella at the airport. Apparently it was a liquid and in a handbag so it was a no-go. Seriously though, what were they afraid of? That the calories would suddenly explode out of the jar? It was even sealed and untouched, for probe's sake. And why is it a liquid if it doesn't even budge when you turn it upside down? Hell, even plastic is a liquid if you heat it long enough.
And to add gas to the fire, they sell Nutella at the duty-free. Why would you sell something if it wouldn't get past security control if it had to? This stinks of hypocrisy.

You could mix your glass of nutella with the bag fertilizer that another passenger has in its handbag to produce explosives. Or kidnap the plane by holding your glass of nutella with homoepathic contents of nuts in it by threatening to rub it into the face of the flight attendant with the nut allergy....

About to go Mars for the first time, June 26, 2035... Bad transfer orbit, and then Orbiter crashed when I went 100000x...

If the armoured veteran squads in Xenonauts can be thought of as Space Marines, then I've just started using auxiliary Imperial Guard squads as entertainment backup. Basic armour and laser weapons. 50% and higher casualty rate. How fun horrible. :)

I tend to lose that game on the balance sheet every time. It seems that I just can't distribute my financial resources properly (then again, I'm only playing Iron Man mode by principle, and replacing all those soldiers and planes is always a bit of a money drain...).
