At least, it doesn't matter trying some alternatives. Especially since you can have quite some creative fun with LEDs and other technologies.
You can create some good effects using LEDs, but I have yet to see comfortable general lighting using LEDs. The luminace is way too high and the colour is either too 'cold' or has a weird tint. You can use coloured reflecting surfaces, but then the energy saving goes out the window.
And if you want dimmable light you run into all kinds of troubles. Fluorescent lights change colour when dimmed, but they have been getting better lately with the high-frequency drivers. Dimmable LEDs lead to a world of pain if you want uniform light, and if one LEDs pops you often have to change the whole set to make it function.
