Jesus Christ. What's next, playing Minecraft on your TI calculator?

Regarding the whole customer support mess: isnt' German Wings part of LH? They might very well share that resource.

Will there be a C# version of Minecraft now, that runs on my Surface RT?

Well, should they make a version for Windows Phone, something for 8.1/RT8.1 should be relatively straightforward, especially since it appears that Microsoft is going to "fuse" RT and Phone.

I'm more confused by how the heck can you play it on these?
Last time i checked, consoles don't have a mouse, and Android/iOs don't have any game-grade input at all.

Congrats to Notch on reaching the ninth magnitude, however. :)

I don’t see myself as a real game developer. I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world. Minecraft certainly became a huge hit, and people are telling me it’s changed games. I never meant for it to do either. It’s certainly flattering, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.

A relatively long time ago, I decided to step down from Minecraft development. Jens was the perfect person to take over leading it, and I wanted to try to do new things. At first, I failed by trying to make something big again, but since I decided to just stick to small prototypes and interesting challenges, I’ve had so much fun with work. I wasn’t exactly sure how I fit into Mojang where people did actual work, but since people said I was important for the culture, I stayed.

I was at home with a bad cold a couple of weeks ago when the internet exploded with hate against me over some kind of EULA situation that I had nothing to do with. I was confused. I didn’t understand. I tweeted this in frustration. Later on, I watched the This is Phil Fish video on YouTube and started to realize I didn’t have the connection to my fans I thought I had. I’ve become a symbol. I don’t want to be a symbol, responsible for something huge that I don’t understand, that I don’t want to work on, that keeps coming back to me. I’m not an entrepreneur. I’m not a CEO. I’m a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.

As soon as this deal is finalized, I will leave Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares and small web experiments. If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I’ll probably abandon it immediately.

Considering the public image of me already is a bit skewed, I don’t expect to get away from negative comments by doing this, but at least now I won’t feel a responsibility to read them.

I’m aware this goes against a lot of what I’ve said in public. I have no good response to that. I’m also aware a lot of you were using me as a symbol of some perceived struggle. I’m not. I’m a person, and I’m right there struggling with you.

I love you. All of you. Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become, but there are too many of you, and I can’t be responsible for something this big. In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it’s belonged to all of you for a long time, and that will never change.

It’s not about the money. It’s about my sanity.

I can really understand him. Know that feeling. But my feeling was never more than a few Euro worth.

I only hope I will be still able to play it on PC/Linux after future updates. :P

PC, Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4 version already exist. I'm not sure about Vita, iOS and Android, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're out there already. As Urwumpe said, Alpha runs on Raspberry Pi.

As far as my opinion of this purchase... 2.5 billion dollars? Microsoft is planning something behind the scenes...

Microsoft isn't planning on making a loss from Minecraft, are they? If so, I have to REALLY wonder where they'll get their money back and that worries me. Minecraft has sold a lot of copies so far. PC version alone is now at what? 16 million? Xbox version is also over 10 million, so we can say it's sold 30 to 40 million copies across various platforms. At most, if we push it, without taxes and expenses, Minecraft has sold for a total of 1 billion dollars.

That said, sales are still there and solid. Minecraft sells in a week what many small indie studios dream about selling in a year. But the sales are slightly dropping and they won't increase. Minecraft won't sell enough copies anymore to account for 2.5 billion dollars.

What can happen for Microsoft to get their money back is that they start asking for a percentage of the huge YouTube Let's play scene as well as squeezing every server owner that makes a profit off of the server. Sales of merchandise and Minecon could also bring in money.

I hope that Microsoft doesn't stick their fingers into Mojang beyond buying it. Notch has done a good job of keeping the company "indie", IMO. I don't want that to change, but I suspect it will.

Microsoft Minecraft 2015 Enterprise Edition

Due to widespread piracy, Microsoft has released a stripped-down Minecraft Express version, which is free to download. The main difference is lack of map mode.

Classic example of dotcom over-valuation... Do you think that Instagram was really worth $1B?

Microsoft Mining & Crafting Simulator 2015

Even worse: Free to play with in-app purchases. Collect the resources and build items yourself, or pay real money to purchase this already-crafted house, door, chest, sword, enchanting table, full diamond armor, blah blah blah.

Remember what what's app traded for? Or Twitch? They don't even sell copies or have any other kind of direct revenue.
This isn't about copies. This isn't about direct revenue. As with Skype, as with What's app, as with the market value of facebook... it's about customer data. Minecraft has a huge player base (it sold over 54 million copies total, as far as I know), and that base is worth a lot in todays economy.

Well, to be honest, I don't know how much it's actually worth. I just know that big companies pay a damn lot for posession of this data nowadays. It's the major fraction of facebooks capital worth, for example. I don't know how it works. I don't know how exactly it translates back to money. Most of the time, I think it's just for increasing the market share which results in higher outside investments and for one-upping the competition. I don't know if anybody ever calculated, or would even be able to calculate if it actually turns a profit in the end, but this is what deals like this are all about.

If you look at how many companies and persons make a living around Minecraft, 2.5 billion is actually a pretty reasonable price. It might look like some crappy backyard game, but the community around it is huge... from special server farms to letsplays, from the brand to the creative opportunities.

Microsoft could quickly capitalize the investment back, even without becoming evil. If Microsoft plans to make the money in just 5 years, it is not unrealistic, regarding that.

Microsoft is really maybe the only company that is large enough and in the challenged situation to buy that company for a fair price, when offered... and which has some advantages... remember that Microsoft bought Nokia? Mojang and Nokia are not far away.

I'd start with minecraft action figures. Not large ones, maybe about 2 cm in height. And some blocks you can put together, so you can replicate your minecraft creations in your living room... oh wait.

Seriously, why didn't LEGO buy Minecraft??

Keep in mind, 2.5 billion is still much less than what Facebook paid for Whatsapp: 18 billion. This turned out to be about 35$ per single user, where the most a single end user could possible have paid Whatsapp was around 3$ or so (WA does not display ads, but requires a fee of about 1$/1€ per year to use).

User database worth $46 per record? I doubt it.

Instagram still has growth potential. Minecraft has hit its peak already. It'll be downhill from here. If Microsoft acquired Minecraft / Mojang a year or two ago (and they possibly tried, I don't know).

Remember what what's app traded for? Or Twitch?

Twitch is essentially the only one of its kind, like YouTube. Yes, there are other streaming sites, like there are other VOD sites, but nothing as big as Twitch and YouTube respectively. Twitch is still very much growing.

You're right, Minecraft has a huge base and I'm sure Microsoft is hoping to make money off that base in the future - even if they just retain a part of that base to sell games to...

There are LEGO Minecraft sets, actually.

Mojang has a deal with LEGO...

I'm just bringing this up because Microsoft generally has a disreputable record and I just don't want them to squeeze the community for every buck or start killing off LPs by demanding a portion of the income...
