I dedicate my 400th post to this nonsense.

I don't know how to show a square root with a normal font.

What happened to all the Chiliasts? I'm beginning to think that maybe they were right...

I'm currently installing Ubuntu 10.04. It's been a long time since I last installed a Linux distro, since Ubuntu provides such good upgrades. But now one of my computers needs a fresh install.

Issues so far:

  • The digital signature of the CD could not reliably be verified by gpg. OTOH, previous times I installed Linux, I didn't check any signature in the first place.
  • On the first attempt, the CD crashed after booting. After a lot of searching on the Internet and trying different boot options, it seems that Ubuntu doesn't really support my type of CD-drive anymore. It now works OK with another drive, but I'm still getting disk read errors. All the retries are probably what makes the installer so slow.

My conclusion is still that Linux is an excellent system as soon as it's installed and configured properly, but that getting there requires some serious skills and time. I guess Ubuntu works fine on most modern PCs, but Canonical doesn't seem to have the manpower to support multiple generations of PCs.

OTOH, I wouldn't try windows 7 on this PC. Would it even work at all with only 512MB on board?

I also have 10.04 LTS here, but I only use it as live-system currently for practicing some Linux operations. Once I have a proper windows box again for orbiter development, I'll turn this one into a full Linux box again.

Update:
It seems to work. Booting is fast, but not the 10 seconds they aim for (probably due to old hardware). The system works smoothly, and even 3D acceleration is back (9.10 was a disaster). I'm now installing 97MB of updates.

I thought I wouldn't get used to the purple theme color, the inverted color theme, and the window control buttons in the left corner of the window bar. Now that I am using it, it goes surprisingly easy.

Just got the news that three people died in Göttingen while disarming a bomb of world war II. It ain't really over yet.

Was one of the dreaded acid fuses... nasty stuff. Reports also sound like it was a 500 kg bomb, and only the inner 300m radius of the evacuation zone had been evacuated at the moment of the accident. They had disarmed some more bombs with such a fuse this week without problems there.

Having fun browsing on my new phone. :D By far the best phone I've owned. It's a MyTouch.

I had a dream last night that I was on the ISS. Apparently my subconscious mind is able to simulate weightlessness. It was pretty cool. I think Garrett Reisman was there too. Probably because a while back I watched that series of videos of him on the ISS.

this came up while firing up flight simulator...

*dhung!*

"error: 1 is greater than 1000000000000"

its an error alright, one is not suposed to be greater than one trillion... i think
i click OK and it prompts up again... then i hold enter, it goes "d-rrrrrrrrrrrr-hung!"

then it goes away and i can fly alright... go figure...

I spent all day today trying to get the ISS 3.1 addon to work.
There goes my last day off for a while...and it still doesn't work! :@ :beathead:
