I've gained a bigger fear of reentries. Once lost my Soyuz program to 20's% or so of reliabilty just because it blew up on the atmosphere.

Well i should have said every mission because thats more along the lines of what i meant.

i lol'd so hard at this:

Orbiter forum just had a short downtime due to... ritualistic cleansing??

you admins just made my day!

back on the race to space stuff, i don't know how you got a failure for the mercury craft, in all the time i've played it, the worst thats ever happened to it is a complete and permanent comms blackout. so then they re-enter and yeah the astronaut is just fine.

I found pretty mean that Mercury exploded because of a "throttle problem", because IRL Mercury had nothing like throttleable engines. Just 3 solid retrorockets and 4 RCS jets.

You must be really lucky, then. I almost always get a catastrophic failure after +/- 3 missions. And the worst is when the chute doesn't deploy.

hmmmm i don't know. But every time i've ever tried to launch a gemini on a saturn platform, something bad happens. Now, i usually just skip up the gemini capsule altogether. The mercury is very reliable, and apollo is well, apollo. Now if only, i never had to recruit astronauts, they were just there. Oh that would be nice, wouldn't it?

If only the money didn't end... What's bad though is if you don't go to the Moon a while after the last astronaut group finishes training. They start to retire after some time, and you don't have enough spacemen to fly to the Moon. Quite frustrating.

What annoys me is that docking never works for the lunar landings! I mean, I almost always win due to the prestige points, (one time it was 126 US to -1 for the USSR) but still. I hate docking. But i love the mercury it has never failed me. That and the explorer satellite. With the russians though, everything somehow blows up, decompresses or spontaneously spins out of control.

Yeah, I once killed a quarter of my cosmonaut reserves by being stubborn, and always loosing them in EVA suit decompression in Lunar orbit.

I've never lost anyone during EVA ops however, the worst was overexertion, but he finished the EVA 'objectives' being what ever they were.

Wew, just back from one of my best Orbiter flights ever. First Apollo to the Skylab. Docking was only 6h after launch, with a 15k closest approach. Such a fast rendezvous is a first to me.

Wow.
Mine usually take a couple of orbits, but mostly because i set rendezvous to be a few orbits later.
