OK, 78% safety was a bit short but...

Deke Slayton just died while trying to become the first american in space.

Now the situation is bad. Russians sent a man in orbit last year, and I have to make a choice now...

I'm going to try the minishuttle "XMS2" (say HL20) program as an act of despair. :idea: But I'm years ahead from a first launch, let's wish to the reds all kind of disasters !

The soviets didn't manage to go further than a manned lunar pass with the Soyuz... After that they seem to have collapsed in a spiral of failures and budget cuts.

My first XMS-2 launch in 1967 was another disaster. I used a boosted Titan (TitanIIIC) and the SRBs exploded at ignition. The computer told me that the LES was successful, thats kind but when you use the minishuttle, that doesn't count. So the 3 astronauts perished. :facepalm:

I won after all. December 1974. So I won AND I got fired. I love that game :lol:

Oh yeah and the mission commander was Gorelick, a female astronaut. So first female on the Moon ! Aldrin is the one that stayed in Lunar Orbit, a nice irony since the game was originally named "Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space" !

What's happened to me in this game at least twice is that I make it to land on the Moon, but somehow the pc's doesn't count it, and in the next turn the Soviets/Americans make it there and win.

Yeah, to have a valid lunar landing you need to have "green" failures at worse. Which means false alarms. A single yellow failure and you landed for nothing, even if everyone makes it back to Earth in one piece

Yet, I love how maximum R&D and safety can still result in a launch failure, for an explorer probe of all things...

Yeah, loosing the Moonshot just because an astronaut broke a nail (not litteraly, but almost there :lol. Makes you want to trash MCC :rofl:.
