Works for wasps, however.

Rural living in the US provides a lot of opportunities for fun.

Part One: probing the enemy defenses. Accidentally striking the nest with a drone. Note how they go nuts on the one camera and actually knock it over. You can hear them impacting it.

Part Two: Killing with Fire. One day later, the damage from the drone strike has already been repaired. Shotgun and jar of fuel. They had it comin'.

I would NEVER attack (European) hornets.

First of all, they are huge, but harmless. Unless you really attack their nest, they don't care much about you. I used to walk with my dogs along a river trial, with just 50 cm between me and a large nest of hornets in a hollow tree. They didn't attack me. They used to land on me from time to time, but if you stay calm and don't freak out, they fly away seconds later.

Next, they love eating the really annoying smaller wasps. Ok, honeybees as well. But also a lot of other annoying insects.

And finally: Killing a European hornet in Germany is illegal and can result in a up to €50,000 fine. They are a protected species here.

Having a nest in your house though is a huge problem. Luckily, it happens rarely, since our hornets prefer living really rural. If you have one, you need the permission of the town and a specialist to get rid of them.

Sounds like it's literally cheaper to accidentally burn down your house and build a new one than kill them carefully.

Well, in the end it's a fine if someone sees you kill them, as usual.

When I was 6 years old, in the summer, a group/swarm of hornets had the bright idea to make a nest in the chimney, which also led to the living room. That wasn't fun to little-me. :hide:

Not really. Removing the nest lawfully is covered by most building insurances, so it does not cost you money.

Setting your house on fire is only partially covered by insurances and should arson be detected (or suspected), you don't see any cent from the insurance.

North American Boldfaced Hornets are NOT harmless. As the description in the above video says, they kill honeybees, which that guy is keeping on his property. And they are ill-tempered and will attack any nearby living thing if they are angered. You can see in the above video how they went after the guy's stationary cameras just for smelling like humans, apparently.

In Germany, a few more experimental beekeepers started to invite hornets to live next to their bee hives. One hive of hornets kills less than 1% of the bees in a beehive (And then not even all hornets - the observation is that individuals specialize on hunting bees in flight), but keep away other insects, which kill about 20-30% of the bees. Especially the fact that hornets also hunt at night makes them very interesting here, because the only other predator in that department on night shift is the bat.

I'm having difficulty differentiating between hornets and wasps. Hornets are bigger, I think. Bees, hornets and wasps constitute a type zero emergency for me. I'll jump out of my chair, run out of the house, that kind of stuff. And it happened once or twice that one flew inside the car while driving...

edit: just googled hornet, and it gave me some gay dating links....turns out Hornet is the name of one of their social networks...

Hornets are a subset of wasps. Wasps are members of Hymenoptera that aren't bees or ants (or sawflies?).

And that is why I tend to check Wikipedia first when looking things up.

Yup

And Wikipedia is mostly text, so it loads faster than, say, IMDB, plus it usually has external links on the page if you want to dig further without getting gay porn cookies or whatever on your computer.

You know, I've just watched "Mission to Venus - an Orbiter movie" for the umpteenth time (amongst other ones). It makes me a bit sad that all some people can say/comment on such is like "what a waste for resources such a mission would be" or that "we couldn't live there", other denigration . . it's a simulator - where's the imagination? It's only 'tend as my granddaughter would say . . .

Still give me a lump in the throat . . . music and scenarios - wish I could do as well . . .
