I used to play orbiter quite a lot - I had it installed on my computer, so I know how to correctly run it. Anyway, my computer got a virus, so I brought it in and they had to re-format everything, so I had to start from scratch, which was okay with me anyway.

Yesterday I downloaded orbiter again, unzipped the .zip, everything was going smooth. But when I chose a scenario and clicked launch, it says

"Orbiter has encountered a problem and needs to close" - nothing loads.

I went into orbiter.log to see what the error was, and this is what I see at the bottom:

**** Creating simulation session
DirectDraw interface OK
Error: Couldn't create the backbuffer
ERROR: Could not initialize 3D environment

What could be going on here?

Thank you to anyone who can help me :)

Double-check your video settings in the launchpad. Did your video driver change? Make sure "Always Enumerate Devices" is checked. Then choose a video mode that supports T&L ("Transform & Lighting").

Which Orbiter version?
What happens if you go to video tab and check enumerate devices (then select video modes again)?
Did you install DirectX?
Which Windows version?

I have "enumerate devices" checked, but it still will not work. I have DirectX 9.0c, and I am running Orbiter version 060929.

Where do I select video mode?

I think you select it by using the drop down box on the "Video" tab of the launchpad

Where do I select video mode?
You select video mode in "Video" tab, by selecting renderer from "3D device" combobox, and "Screen resolution" and "Colour depth (bpp)" below, if you have selected "Full Screen".

Does Orbiter work in windowed mode (click on "Window" button, and then start the simulation)?
