Unfortunately, the hard reentry bank broke the right wing, making the craft pretty much uncontrollable once the APU fuel ran out (I swear, just about everything imaginable went wrong this time :rolleyes:). The crew was forced to eject, and were safely recovered despite the loss of the XR-2309.

I wonder how the emergency ejection of the full crew complement of XR-2 would look like, especially IRL :huh:

Well you do have to be pretty slow & low to do it, but I dont think it would be too difficult to do through the nose cone at low speeds. Probably just tumble down and along the bottom of the hull until free.

Unless by "slow" you mean stalled, I think you underestimate the effects of wind-shear and low pressure zones. Even if you got out, you just end up pinned against the belly in the hollow by the scram-jet doors.

Well it did crash, so essentially yes it would be stall speed. I forget how slow it actually was, but it wasn't very high even compared to normal aircraft speeds.

On second thought, maybe the cabin hatch would make more sense in the event of a bailout, since its mostly clear of any blockages behind it on the aircraft, and crew could more easily get a head start by pushing against the sides of the hatch when they jump.

In any case, I didn't design it, and there isn't a lot that can be done for the XR2 mesh anymore. :shrug:

By the way: are there any addons with dedicated aircraft for the Martian atmosphere? Trying to do a low-altitude flight with a DG is a bit of a nightmare.

I have a few screenshots of x-plane (back in the day when it was a new simulator) that show several planes for flight on mars. In most cases, the runways are long, and the approach speeds really high, 300-400 knots.

2 of them are sci-fi.
1 is a realistic nasa study
1 is rocket powered

The thrust vectoring rocket powered learjet is quite the ****kicker alright! Loads of fun to manually regulate the lifters' power and direction while transitioning to aerodynamic flight.. and back again for a hover landing. It's quite the sight to fly an airliner-style approach tail-first at high speed using full thrust for braking. Then pivoting around 180 to land normally somewhere near the threshold.

I'll have to find these ancient screenshots. Perhaps they can seed some ideas.
