Need star catalogue

Does anybody know where to download a real star catalogue?
I've found sites where you can download it, but catalogues are segmented in files with portions of the sky, and are too huge.
I would need a relatively small catalogue in one file, preferably in text format but it doesn't matter if it is in binary format, as long as it comes with a description of the fields.
