Exactly 37 Years after Its Discovery, Pluto’s Moon Charon Is Being Revealed

Charon discovery image.

Charon discoverers James Christy (seated) and Robert Harrington in 1978.

In June 1978, U.S. Naval Observatory astronomer James Christy noticed something unusual. He was studying highly magnified photos of Pluto, and Pluto wasn’t round. A small bump marred one side of blurry Pluto.

How do you pronounce Ceres?
Spelling is "Cerera" in IPA [tserera] - exactly how it is spelled here. In Latvian "c" is pronounced like "ts".
And it is logical, because "ts" is a sound, on its own, and it is great that letter "c" is not some kind of a substitute for "s" or "k". Another example -"Cunami".
Of course, a bit off-topic, it leads to strange spelling of surnames (mostly french or english), for example, Edvins Oldrins, Žans Lū Kretjēns, Ričards Maleins,
Alans Bīns, Džons Jangs, or (for Molson) Žans Fransuā Klervuā, Žans Pjērs Enjerē, Žans Žaks Favjē etc. (Character encoding - Baltic (Windows)).

Well, on topic, I am becoming strongly addicted to New Horizons website. Almost each day Pluto is larger and larger - I see clearly dark spot on Charon, mentioned earlier, seems that Pluto surface features create illusion it is being illuminated from another direction than actually it is.

On flyby day itself, no pictures will come back to Earth, because New Horizons will be so busy gathering data.

Anyway, given the distance, that's far from being "live", so more or less a few dozen of hours... :)

I took it to mean no pictures at all would be taken at closest approach. Thinking about it, that would be a bit...daft?

No, the probe will be too busy to transmit them back.

It'll be like a tourist in an open topped bus, tearing through at high speed and frantically photographing the wonders around it! It'll transmit the highest-priority ones later, then the rest "much" later...

That is the most accurate analogy I've seen of the science campaign for New Horizons!

They look like time lapse transit shadows

Uhh... Is no-one concerned that Pluto appears to have teeth...?

Astonishing pictures. This is a dream come true...
