During WWII there were all sorts of rumors about enemy aircraft, in this case somehow reports of the DB606 engine (used on the HE177) got mixed with rumors of a new version of the ME109 producing an aircraft that would have had 'interesting' handling characteristics.

Flight global magazine has some information on the DB606 engined version (Artists impression attached)

Some more sketchy information describing it as being fitted with a DB605 can be found in the US FM30-35 document linked to below.

A discussion thread on the Secret Projects forum (Linked below) suggests that the DB604 (Wikipedia) might have been the 'X-engine' mentioned in the Flight Global article.

It had been the Bf 109 - there was no Me 109.

Since the DB 606 had been a dire fire hazard in the He 177 prototypes (The He 177 had been called "Reichsfeuerzeug"/National pocketlighter), this would have been a pretty good way to end the war quickly.

The DB 610 X-engine used in the production models of the He 177 had been more reliable with 24 cylinders, but still been not comparable to the smaller fighter engines. It is doubtful that it would have been used that way.
